Ok so I got the KK with about 16,500 on it and want to get the oil changed soon at around 19k. First off do you guys recommend changing to synthetic? Ive heard alot of good things but want to know how the 3.7 likes it. Also would like to know what fluids I should get changed while its in the shop. Thanks in advance |

Synthetic vs conventional and change intervals is highly debated.... Personally I run Mobile 1 synthetic and change it myself every 5k. I did change both my diff fluids and T case fluid at around 20k. |

I run Castrol Edge 5w20 full synthetic and a Wix #57045 oil filter. I do the oil changes myself every 3,000- 4,00 miles and it's not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. |

I swapped over to Valvoline Synpower full synthetic and a Napa Gold(Wix) filter. Since going to synthetic I moved to 5k miles between changes. I still have not done my T case or Diffs...Im at like 38k and hope to do it by 40k |

There must be some kind of tool that will fit in there? Ha ha, my first interpretation of your post was: what are people smoking? I have a cup-like wrench tool that fits over the end of the oil filter and snaps on to a ratchet or ratchet extension. It looks something like this: ![]() It is still not an easy oil change, especially with skid plates, but it would be impossible to grab the filter with my hand without removing the skid plates first. Even then it would be hard to get any leverage. |

If your arms are too big, see if a friend or a family member can reach in there better. Remember, an oil filter should never be over tightened which is why you are able to unscrew it without a tool. |

Why change your own, Chrysler advertised 4 oil changes for $64.99 over the weekend on tv. |

I have never read anywhere that you only tighten an oil filter by hand. That is what I ended up doing thou. The one that came off was only on hand tight. Of course I only figured that out after fighting with every thing I could think of to get it off. When I got something wrapped around it I thougt it was sliping but it was already loose. All I had to do is take it off by hand. I always tell my wife to look for leaks when she leaves a parking lot. I don't trust it. I wonder how many others only do it by hand.( I do mean the oil change.) Bill |

I have only ever hand tightened my oil filters as I'd rather not have to deal with a stuck oil filter. I use a Purolator Pure One oil filter and it even says on the box to hand tighten it. No oil leaks from the filter at all |

Bill I turn wrench's for a living(16 year ASE Master Tech) and never once have used any tool besides my hand to tighten a oil filter and never once had a oil filter loosen up.The only oil filters I use actual tools to install are canister type filters. |

I'm an old man and grew up with canister type oil filters and there of course you needed to tighten. I always thought you had to hand tighten then like you said another 1/4 to half a turn. Well you cant do that with a hand if it's already hand tight. But I guess if you only take the slop of by hand then you could get another 1/4 turn. Maybe I have been doing it wrong all these years. But from all the filters I've ever taken off this was the first one that was already loose and didn't need a tool. I figured the guy before me had the same problem and never tightened it. I will be interesting to hear what others have been doing. For now I'm just going to look for leaks and leave it hand tight. Thanks for your input. When you get cars in from other shops do you need a tool to take them off? I can't be the only one that still tightens them. I also didn't see tha when you loosen the filter there is a chanel that takes the old oil way from all the stuff in the way. I wasn't ready for that! S o for first timers look close so you can catch the oil and not spill it like I did. |
