Whining Transmission?: http://youtu.be/F_XjeonF4N0

Above is a short clip for the sound of the whine. I believe it's the transmission because it's volume and pitch coincide with the tachometer. Any clues what the issue is?

If you're not moving, I don't think it's the tranny.

It does it even louder when moving. And the faster the louder too.

Where you in park or neutral? If so I don't think it's the tranny. If your in gear out trannys are known for their torque converter whine.

Maybe check your fluid?
It doesn't sound super bad, but sounds like a lot of air by the microphone, or part of the whine.
Is it shifting okay?
Might want to see how it does in 4 wheel drive, too.

Like other said, check the fluids.
Hows the sound from under the hood?

Not the fluids. I've checked my trans fluid and it's good to go when cold and hot. I changed my engine oil and filter last weekend and was doing it before.

Listening under the hood it sounds like my belt and/or fan. Think I'll unplug my fan and see if that stops it.

That was a good idea to check the belt... how does it look? Easy to replace it if you need to.

No knicks or abnormalilties but it might also be a pulley needing grease (not the cleanest engine compartment...my "mud" is Blue Ridge Mountain clay)

So, unplugging the fan will do nothing since it's attached to the belt...I'm at a loss haha.

could be an idler pulley. pull your belt off and check the various pulleys, maybe start it. dont let it run too long without the belt on though.

It does this during normal driving so would it be an idler pulley?

I has another video being uploaded, this one focusing on the engine...once up I'll post a link.

yes your pulleys are moving with the speed of your motor which is why it changes with the rpms.

What's the best way to remove the belt then?

Found a youtube video...that was really easy to remove haha

Also...it doesn't make that noise anymore...so it's definitely somewhere in the belt path...

EDIT:I spun the pulleys without the belt on (hope that isn't an awful thing to do). The only one that makes a noise (specifically a squeak) is the top right...which I think is the alternator (not engine savvy).

Thanks Scaro for thinking of looking inside the engine bay

Thanks DirtyKK for the idea of removing the belt

And yes Gage, after a quick youtube video to learn how to remove a belt, this was ridiculously easy.

I believe I have narrowed down the source of the noise. The alternator (top right pulley) was the only one that, when spun manually, made a noise. It made a squeak whine when spun.

I am uploading a video of the start up after removing the belt to show that there is no longer any noise. Will edit this once uploaded.

Here are some pics: Image

Cool deal. I was thinking idler pulley, as they are known to go out.
Good news its not the trany!

I might replace the idler pulley first if it's significantly cheaper...with that said is there a way to replace the pulley on the alternator without swapping the whole thing out?

Post subject:  Re: Whiny transmission?

If it is the alternator, then likely it is the internal bearings making the noise. Short of rebuilding the alternator (generator) the only option is to swap it out.
