'11 Libby with 66k miles. Got a tapping/knocking coming from the top of the engine on the drivers side. I taking it to the dealer I bought it from about 6 months ago. It is still under the powertrain warranty, so would something like a timing chain or valve component be covered under this? (Man, I sure hope so.) |

As long as the engine is stock, it should be covered. |

They give you an answer of what it is? Does it sound anything like mine? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZiWMGDu9gk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW82qOT1b-g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rAms0rxSu4 Been to two dealers, and neither can give me a straight answer. Last time I wanted them to check it out they said it was a "fuel rail noise" Noise goes away almost completely after 20~+ mins of driving. Piston slap? Exhaust leak? Lifter tick? More noticeable when under load. Example, putting it into gear and foot on brakes. 08 KK with 85,000 K - Tried different oils, injector cleaners, seafoam intake nothing seems to change the ticking. It's rather embarrassing and I would like to get it fixed before it possibly burns out my valves. |

Guessing here, but lifter tic/ bad lash adjuster is what I am thinking. Pull the valve cover off the side with the noise and check the lash adjusters. There are several Vids on Youtube on how to check and replace them. Check your oil level, too much or too little can cause issues. |

This has been going on for 2+ years.. Might have been going on for longer as when I purchased the Jeep I didn't notice the noise at first. Through 5X oil changes through different oil change places and one done by myself as I wanted to use a top quality oil filter. With it being a lifter tick would that not stay constant even after the car is at operating temps? Would it be normal for the noise to pretty much go away after it warms up? Either way I'll take a look at some videos to see. Thanks for the input. |

Could be a low oil pressure situation, partially blocked oil port. After driving for a while the pressure will build up so it will quiet down. How soon after start up does the dash oil warning light go out? If you are able to isolate the sound better, it would be easier to diagnose. Some folks use a stethoscope to do this. I'm too cheap to buy one... LOL I use a wood dowel, put one end on my ear, and the other end on various parts till find where the sound is the most pronounced. CAUTION! Keep the dowel away from moving parts, or serious/fatal injuries could occur! I can't say for sure what the cause is. It could be one/more on your original post as well as possibly a crank/rod bearing. Easiest one to check is the lash adjusters. You can also try removing the serpentine belt to eliminate the accessories and tensioner pulley. But don't run the engine for long with the belt off! |

No oil warnings... And yeah I'm trying to pinpoint where exactly the click is coming from. Which is why one of those videos I'm crawling all underneath the jeep. |

It ended up being a bad water pump. But man, it sounded a lot nastier than what it was. Entire thing was covered under powertrain warranty. |

Wanted to say thank you. Had the same sound coming from under the hood. Just replaced the water pump this week and that solved the problem. Crazy to think the bearing went on a 2011 water pump after only 45k miles! |
