Hi everyone,

Background:
My KK is at 94K miles but has a brand new remanufactured engine that has only 8K miles on it. In order to keep the 3 year/100K warranty on the engine, I need documentation of all my oil changes and so I get them done at a shop. (I will do them myself again as soon as the warranty expires.) This time the shop used 5w30 oil instead of the 5w20 that is specified in the owners manual and on the filler cap. It is my understanding that 30-grade is a thicker oil, and I can understand them using a thicker grade if my engine was old and worn, but not on a new engine.

Question:
Will this be an issue at all for the new engine? I'm not seeing too much of a difference in engine performance. Perhaps a slight loss of mpg.

I don't really want to go back there and fight with the shop unless there is a real need. Hoping 5w30 and 5w20 are close enough that there won't be any mechanical issues, and I'll just go back to 5w20 at the next oil change.

Thanks for your input.

Shouldn't make much of a difference. Only reason maybe if you ever need to warranty the engine and see that just once a different oil was used they may say something, they shouldn't but.....
Main reason for them to go to 5-20 was to try and wring every MPG out of an engine they can. 5-30 is what KJs are recommended to run, won't hurt

Thanks, Tom. That's probably why the mechanic used 5w30, especially if he had some KJ's in the shop recently before me. Glad to know it won't hurt. :D
