I just dinged 80,000 miles and have over months had slight (sounds like valve tick) is this common? I seem to be the only one who notices but it freaks me out a bit. It's a 2010 liberty 3.7 |

I've been told the 3.7L are a notoriously ticky engine. Heck sometimes in drive throughs it kinda sounds like a diesel. A quick video clip may be helpful to determine whether it's normal or not. |

One of the issues that cause the engine to sound louder is the use of plastics. Intake/ valve covers etc are all plastic so the sound intensifies . Most all are somewhat noisy but like mentioned a video may help since it maybe something totally different |

Thank you guys, I will get a video when the rain stops if it ever does. I notice it most at idle to, on top of that my gas mileage has always been terrible. After reading on here that seems to be common as well. I get roughly 50 out of a quarter tank in the city and 60 or so on the highway. |

the "ticking" is normal. now, if you hear pings, like metal hitting metal. then you should really start worrying. if you listen to a current day v6 diesel with def additive, our 3.7 sounds almost like the v6 diesel. I love it! once I got the larger throttle body, the engine quieted down a bit. you'll still hear the noisy injectors though. |

Normal as others have stated. One member, lfhoward, started noticing his engine ticking a bit more than usual and actually had to replace his engine. |

Mine was more of a low end rattle at high rpms. I noticed it most when climbing a hill in low gear or cresting a hill and coasting before the transmission kicked it back into 4th. Before the end, I would call it a loud clacking sound, rather than a rattle. A tick from the valve cover is probably no big deal. If it's low down in the engine (rod bearing in my case), that's not good. Just do your maintenance and oil changes on time, and you will probably be ok. Gage, I am religious about oil changes and maintenance. Either I got really unlucky with that engine, or the previous owner neglected something in the first 23K miles of its life before I got it. It died for me around 86K. |

Thanks for listing the specifics about that situation, Lauren. I agree the oil changes are very important just as having a clean throttle body and fresh spark plugs. Stay on top of those and our Jeeps run very strong.
