Post subject:  Questions About Skids

I've been putting off getting skids for a while now.
Where's the cheapest place to get them?
There is a dealership a couple of miles away from my house...
If I get skids, it'd be hard to say no to the off road trip coming up.
Also curious what skids would do to gas mileage.
Would skids make the Jeep's ride quality change at all because of extra weight?

Amazon was the cheapest place I found the transmission and transfer case skids at (Just over $100 for the two plus shipping for one of them). I found the engine skid for $78 plus $20 shipping online at a weird place. Had PayPal so I trusted it haha.

As for the weight, it's MAYBE another 30lbs...(not sure on gas tank skid...) high doubt you'll see a ride difference.

When Lauren was over my house not long ago, the skids actually look aerodynamic to an extent...
Really, that's all they weigh?
Those sound like reasonable prices for their function.
Looks like I may have to do the old remove the headlight trick for doing future oil changes.

Ish, they're just under the crossmembers (1/2 the bolts go in the crossmembers)

The Transmission skid weight 10lbs, transfer weighs about 5lbs...tops...not sure on engine skid...just bought it today (didn't know transmission NEEDED the engine skid...sigh...)

I checked carefully for a change in gas mileage when I added my skids and sliders. Really, there is zero effect on MPG's. At least nothing my Scangauge could detect, and nothing that showed up on Fuelly when calculating MPG the old fashioned way. This was before my roof rack, lift, and larger tires.

Back in July of 2012, I compared Jparts.com, Justforjeeps.com, FactoryMoparParts.com, and MoparOnlineParts.com. FactoryMoparParts.com edged out the others because they shipped the whole kitten kaboodle to me for just $31.

7/2012 pricing:
KJ Tow hooks: $97
Transfer case skid: $48
Transmission skid: $48
Front suspension skid: $75
Gas tank skid: $219 (comes with extra bolts you can use on the radiator skid)
Radiator skid: $29 (need to get 2 nutserts from dealer)
TOTAL: $418

Do you write down and save everything, Lauren? I feel as if you could give the date and time and what brand was your first oil change with your first car ever...

Ha ha, well, I did have that skid plate info in an excel file. :)

With this Jeep, I've kept a spreadsheet on iCloud of all the maintenance and mods I've done. So, I have a record of when I did certain things, and when scheduled maintenance is due. I don't keep a record on my spreadsheet of how much money I've sunk into the Jeep... I want to stay positive! :D

Now my first car ever was a '93 Dodge Shadow. I didn't do any of my own oil changes or my own maintenance, besides washing and detailing it. On my next car, an '02 Dodge Neon, I changed spark plugs for the first time. Then, when I got my first Jeep, an '00 Jeep Cherokee, I got myself a Haynes Manual and joined CherokeeForum and really started doing oil changes, spark plugs, cleaning the IAC, changing the blower motor resistor, rotating tires, etc. I got the Jeep bug with that one! And that Jeep was a diva. Lots of stuff to fix all the time! But didn't keep detailed records. Now with the '08 KK I am doing more in depth stuff like brakes and suspension work, and keeping good records of what was done and when.

Can someone confirm the radiator skid plate part number?
I seen 2 or 3 different part numbers in various threads.
Can't figure out if it ends in AA, AB, or AC.

You want AC (unless AD is out there). The two letters at the end are the change level. Changes can be minor, like going to parts made from a different tool, to fairly major. As long as it is reverse compatible, the 8 numbers will be the same.

Here is a write-up I did on installing it. viewtopic.php?f=104&t=76967 You can get it in without taking the bumper off, but the engine skid has to be off and it requires some finagling. The best thing to do is hand start all the bolts and get everything lined up before torquing them down.

It might be a bit late to start now, but if you bench press a lot, it will help you with getting the plates in the right spot. :-)r

Okay lol. I'd love to support Morgan one day and buy one of his products, but haven't found one yet that I'd like to purchase.

After you purchase them all, let us know where you chose to buy them from and how much! I think skids are gonna be my next big purchase besides A-arms.
