Post subject:  She got broken...

Went to Chaos Off Road park and within an hour of wheeling I broke a CV joint on my driver's CV shaft assembly. Bummed out my entire Saturday, woke up in the morning packed up camp and headed home...about 1.5 hours away from home, my engine begins to overheat. Turn off the A/C and it cools off. Then it flares back up to 250° going 70mph. Get off and coast to a Sheetz but the engine caps out at 280° and has ZERO fluid in the coolant reservoir because it's sprayed everywhere in the engine bay. Still not sure what's wrong but currently waiting on a Jeepin' buddy to pick me up because she won't turn over, even after adding water into the reservoir.

It doesn't LOOK like the head gasket blew...the oil is only just now started to turn brown from golden at 3500mi and it's still thin-thick like oil is. My coolant was dirty for some reason but that might be due to an overdue coolant flush needing to be done. Current thoughts are a clogged thermostat with a possible seized engine...

Well if Chaos included mud - you might check if the radiator's clogged

Got her home. She was able to start to be driven off the trailer. So good news is she's not got a seized engine. Something is wrong with the coolant.

It's not mud related as the temps rose 1.5 hours after leaving Chaos. And when the temps rose it was 10° every 30 seconds.

It seems like the coolant was mostly dirty...so I plan on taking everything cooling related for the engine and cleaning everything out of it and putting in a new water pump and thermostat.

I had a similar issue

Bad water pump

Seems to definitely be a bad water pump. Got a new water pump (with gasket and pulley attached), another gallon of MOPAR coolant, MOPAR thermostat, 4 gallons of distilled water, 10 quarts of 5w-20 Mobil1 and 2 Mobil1 oil filters so I can change this oil now (since engine overheated) and change it again in 1500mi just to be safe and back in schedule with my tire rotations.

CV axle should arrive this morning but I won't be going into town until I fix the KK.

Fixed her up last night. Found a good write-up for water pump replacement on the jeepkj forum thanks to 4x4kayak. I'll post up the link in the tech section so lfhoward can add it into the How-To Index he so generously made and upkeeps.

Did you check with the dealer many water pumps were covered under warranty, do a google search. Should have picked up a thermostat that if it fails it opens up. Motorad I think.

The water pumps was an '08 issue with a certain range of serial codes. I had already looked when I saw the recall to make sure mine wasn't apart of it. Won't be covered by warranty.
