So ....Thought I 'd service & check over the KJ prior to dragging Millie across to S.A.

Just got a call from Danny (mechanic) 1. Radiator blocked.....suspected rubbish out put from engine block. Radiator has been removed and sent for cleaning .
2. Missing part from thermostat... not allowing water to flow freely through to radiator ......Replacement thermostat.

Items 1 &2 explains the kj running hot at times under load (e.g. steep hills pulling Millie etc.)

3. Front discs too thin to skim...New front discs & pads

4. awaiting further report on ball joints & bushes etc.
5. 10,000km service

It will be apart over night waiting for the radiator to return from its inspection & clean out & re-assemebly. So I await with anticpation for the end result.

Maybe I'll stay home for the holidays :roll:

Check with ABS for the rotors and pads. Front rotors were 116 each and pads 95 for the set.

Item 2. It seems the top section of the Thermostat (flat brass disc which sits on a small spring which sits on top of a bigger spring) has disappeared (i.e.flat brass disc)and feared to have gone into the block itself hopefully it is too big to go into the water pump.

6. Top steering arm bushes to be replaced (Cmohr Clunks)

Is that the out Tie-rod ends????? I think I got the new ones for 175 each. But, maybe Jeeepart has some good secondhandies, they'd be aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalot! cheaper. Simple to replace takes around 5-10 minutes. Then all you need is a wheel alignment.

Or is it the Bushing for the steering rack itself????

That bit of something thormosat sounds like aa bit of a worry, I'd be concerned wit it blocking water flow in the block...Maybe a high presure backwards wash might dislodge it and bring it out the way it went in????

So the results are in...........

Radiator
Removed, Flushed & cleaned. Engine block reverse flushed. New Thermostat.
It seems that the existing thermstat was a chysler part but........the wrong size (too long)and evident it that at some stage it was altered to fit....hence the top section was missing.

Brakes
Front rotors ($210) & pads replaced ($129)

10,00okm service

Yes it has put a bit of a dent in the Xmas budget :cry:

, but pleased to get things rectified before the Journey rather than in the middle of it. I'm not sure if LOST KJ Road Side assist is available as far as SA :wink:

Yes again, Millie is so excited about the trip ahead she is having New stablizing Legs install & her 12v system refurbished next week in anticipation. :lol:

Crikey Water must be expensive for flushing systems down there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps there is a water surcharge to pay for the recycling plant, or new dams. You could probably flush it with Johnny Walker Black Label for less than that.

LOST roadside assistance is available if your passing through Sydney on the way to SA.

A majority of the costs was in labour e.g removal of the radiator & service/clean (found to be 40% blocked) re-install.

Yeah, Yeah, I've seen the map. Some people might be taking the scenic route: drive by shootings, drunken riots, and that's just in the last 24 hours.
