Still no final word on 4.10 pricing, but, hoefully should know in the next few days....

Furthermore to the clunking frontend issues, I have been reading here on LOST about tie-rod end making clunking noises, so I have been having a little look see at the steering rack, and, did find a bit of play there. Firstly the rack itself did have a little loose play in the mounting bushes, with one side of the car jacked up, I could play with that wheel and as I tryed to turn it (left/right) I could hear a clunk and could see the rack itself moving up and making a noise on the mounting bolt itself. So I had some nolathane bushes lying around that I cut two 4mm "spacer washers" from, and removed the rack mounting bolts and placed the new spacers in with the bolts, then tightened it all back down again. Great, rack now doesn't move at all, but, still a small cluck, as there does seem to be a little play in the tie-rod itself. Test drove the car, and the clucking noise I generally get was greatly reduced.

Also, I found that the "Pivot bushes" they are the ones that connect the clevis to the lower control arms ( clevis - they connect the front struts and coils to the lower control arms ,thus take all the weight of the front end) are quite worn, even to the point that on the righthand side some of the rubber of the bush has burst out of the joint and the bolt seems to be at a slight angle. There could very well be play in there as well, but, I could not take the weight of the car/sping off the joint tp see if there is. I have ordered new "pivot bushes" from Shane at Mansfield (will be here in two days) and will hopefully fit them this weekend. I don't think this is anykind of "Damage" I think its really just wear'n'tear on this design of front end suspension.

The saga continues :P

cmohr, I had a look at those bushes on yours and agree, they're worn to the point they've been pushed down and squashed out a fair bit. Another customer of mine john (alsymer I think) has the same issue. He rang Jeep and they said they come as a complete arm as that lower bush is what they call "metalastic" and is a hydraulic press fit  'Metalistic' just means that the rubber is permanently bonded to the bush, very common for OEM control arm bushes on all makes and models.

Righto....

New "pivot bushes" came this arvo, they look like they may just do the trick, I'll get some pics of the old ones and do an install write-up (for all those that need a good novel to read late at night). Now looking at the old ones closely from the front and rear, you can really see just how much they have degraded, they have crushed down a good 5mm of the rubber, so that must leave play in there to knock up and down going over bumps.

I checked the service manual on how to do the install, and it does say you need to use "bushing jigs" to remove and reseat the new bushes. From what I can tell, these "jigs" look suspiciously like a bolt/washer/spacer and nut to me ( more like "bush jigs" ), to pushout the old one then pull backin the new ones, but, I'll pop in to Albion to get the poop on exactly what to do from Anthony.

Can't say that it will happen this weekend as I'm trying to put in a driveway at home over this long weekend now, was going camping, but, hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.

More later

My clunks are brought to me exclusively by the stabilizer bar, every time I remove it I have have to go for the long handle with the 3/4 18mm socket to keep it quiet.

Heres a couple of pics of the Clevis Pivot bushes that I'm talking about. They are the ones that attach the struts/coils to the lower control arms.

In the pics, you can see rubber bursting out from under neath, also, hard to actually tell in the pics, but the where you see the top of the bushing on the clevis , the bolt should be up about 5mm higher so as it is level. Anyway, I'll take some better ones and comparison shots anyway when I do the install.

Welll...... CLUNK in the Front end has been identified...

Outer tie-rod ends, both Left and Right, found heaps of play in them on the weekend, after I got in there and really really really looked and looked. I always thought it was something in there, but, couldn't really tell, but, I finally bought myself a trolley jack for changing over the wheels all then time and that allowed me to pick up the front end and move thoings around.

350.00 shiny dubloons will be the ransom paid.

Parts ordered, and will arrive later in the week, hoping to fit them this weekend. So tools at the ready lads.

Oooh arrrh.
