Just phoned Jeeeeepart, they say they have one, and hopefully will put it in on the weekend....

So anyway, I was just eating some dried fruit, and I thought I'd tell you what I found on the weekend.

For the last few months I have had a bit more rubbing in the front end (tyres on the guards) and looking at the car from the side, I could swear that the front wheels looked closer to the rear of the wheel well than before, but, maybe it was just the light playing tricks with me. On a couple of occassions I have shown you lads that I thought that maybe the whole front end had slid backwards on the body, as there was an area that I had oversprayed kill-rust on the body/engine cradle, and it looked to now have a clear space between the overspray and where the engine cradle was.

Well, I read thru some stuff, and then thought I'd check the bolt tensions for the engine cradle to body...... OMFG... on the left hand side (the side where I thought it had slipped back) the bolts were quite loose, IE, it took nearly no pressure to loosen them off, that made me quite concerned, I then checked the right side, they too took very little pressure to slacken off.

So I then decided I would have to loosen the entire engine cradle, including the transmission cross member and the transfer case skid plate, then take an ever so slight amount of weight off the engine assembly by jacking the body only up (via my ARB bar) I was then able to clearly see the positioning holes for the engine cradle to the body. There is a square hole in the body that matches up with a slightly bigger square in the engine cradle. Mine overlapped by ablout 5mm. Every other KJ I have looked at since I noticed that mine seemed to be moving has had the body positioning square in the centre of the cradle square. I took nearly no effort to simply use a short pry bar to pull the cradle forward on the left side and line up the squares, but, on the right side, it felt a bit harder, I was able to move it about 4mm so as the back of the square lined up, but, I think it is actually the steering linkages that may be stopping it from moving any further forward. I will look into that later this week. I then retightend the engine cradle and transmission cross memeber bolts to spec as in the service manual.

Firstly, on the left side of the car, the wheel looks far more centred in the wheel well, and I know its back where it used to be as when I pulled the cradle forward the overspray area realigned perfectly, so I'm happy with that, on the right side, it is better , but , I still think it needs to come about 4mm or so further forward. I measured the wheel clearance from the tyre to the rear of the wheel well, and the right is sitting about 4mm back closer than the left side. I'll correct this but to do so I need to find what is stopping it coming forward freely, and as I said , I think its the steering. More to investigate there.

Secondly, I was concerned that these major bolts were SO loose, I think it is something folks should ask their service folk about. I am concerned that mine had slipped backwards and I'm not entirely sure as to what kind of adverse wear this may have put on drive components????. I did notice a slightly smoother ride this morning when I was coming to work, as of late I have been getting only what I can describe as a driveline vibe from the front end, now, that is a great deal less, this could also just be the tightening of the engine cradle to the body itself......also, I don't know if its related , but, about 2 weeks ago my ABS light came on whilst driving and the system did not work, I was going to drop down to the service centre to have them check it out, and still will, but, this morning after driving the car the ABS light turned off, and the system is working again???????? Odd to say the least...

In conclusion, my engine cradle had slipped backwards on the body, the bolts holding the cradle to the body were loose, I had noticed increased tyre rubbing on the rear of the wheel well, and a driveline vibe from the front end. I in no way advise anybody to undertake adjustment of this themselves and if they think they too may have a problem to speak with their respective service centre about it.There where a great number of things I had to check on before doing this, checking for all possible contact points between engine and engine bay, suspension components, drivelines, brakes, cooling systems and wiring..I have been investiagating for about 2 months before i did anything. I will still be taking the car down to the service place and talking about what happened and get them to check it all out.

My jeep saga continues

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!! If this has happened to you could it happen to others? Scares the hell out of me, maybe if JEEP can't answer as to why, we could be looking at another recall. What would have happened if this had gone on for much longer could have been very bad. Glad you are on top of things keep us informed.

Look anyone who knows me and seen how I drive the Jeep wouldn't be surprised, but still, I was a little dissapointed, I had my Toyota for 11 yrs, never had a part failure from it, I only ever had to replace the radiator after 6 yrs, and did replace the clutch plate and timing belt after 8 yrs because I thought I should, not that it showed bad signs, and I hammered that thing. With the Jeep, I just drove it as a car for its first 2 yrs, and then started to 4x4 it. Don't get me wrong, I love my KJ and will continue to drive the thing up hills, and I reckon if I was driving any brand 2004 model 4x4 I'd probably be having the same issues, they just don't make em like they used to eh....

Most important thing is that its worth mentioning to a service dept, cause it only takes seconds to check.

I would think mine coming loose would be from driving, not design, or servicing, my KJ has bounced around heaps of hill climbs, and thru rugged outback roads for 1000's of km's, Its just something else for me to keep an eye on.

I'm more puzzled and concerned aboot the ABS starting to work again after being offline with a warning light for the last 2weeks..

Thought I'd just top this up a little with the events of the last few weeks..

Well, ABS lights were sensor failures, ECU recorded failure for front right and rear sensors, could have been dirty, don't know, also, brake fluid was low, and that was causing a problem with the self test on startup, causing the ABS light to come on as well. I had the fluid topped up, and gave the sensors a spray and the light hasn't been on for a couple of weeks..

Also in the braking area, rear pads delaminated last Friday, and I had the rotors (front and rear ) surfaced and new pads, so alls good in the stopping dept.

Right, upper control arm ball joints and arms. Further more to my ongoing "front end clunks" I found a heap of play in the upper ball joints, you didn't get a clunk all the time , just when the road was currogated, or if I went over a pothole. Turns out the only thing limiting the front wheel/suspension droop is the upper control arms stopping against the body of the car (in those little mounting pockets ) that in turn means the ball joint takes all the downwards force and weight of the suspension/wheel and travel and hammers the ball joint apart. When I got mine out last night I could pill the joint out about 3mm or more, so I think catostrophic failure was only weeks away, and that would not have been good. I have replaced the arms , and that was not as easy as I was hoping, you have to have very small hands and 19 elbows and wrists on each arm to do it easily, I being nonmutant, had all sorts of discomfort contorting myself to get to the bolts, but, finally did, and now all good there as well..

Now, I'm looking at getting limiting straps for the front end, as I don't want a rpeat of this to happen again. I want to stop the lower control arm before the weight comes hammering onto the upper ball joint when I lift a wheel off the ground.. Now this seach is my new nemisisissiissss's.

On a GOOD note, although I had done the pinion reset and that made a world of difference to the car, it still sometimes played up around 60kph, just as I reached 60 it would drop into overdrive, torque converter would lockup and the engine would bog down doing 1100rpm. I read over all my stuff and checked my notes and found although I had found the correct revs per mile to be 677, I must have had a dislecksic day that day, and had them put in 667, well.... I had Jeep reset to 677 and mystery solved, car purrfect at 60kph, still has a little confusion at 70, but, higher revs at 70 don't cause any hassles, and runns great at 100-110kph... Soooooo alll good there too..

Stay tuned..... I'm going away again this weekend, lets see what goes wrong

cmohr..
sounds like you've been having fun...
we definately need to stop the IFS on the bottom rather than the top this has been bugging me for a while...
when my work slows down i have about 20 little projects to fabricate up and this is one of them... limiting straps could be a easier solution.

cheers
