Post subject:  Spare Tyre Fixings
So.....had a holiday of 10,000km, now it seems its time to pay the piper............. :roll:

During our trip through he Flinders Ranges etc. we notice the development of a "Rattle" coming from the rear of the luggage compartment.

Assuming it was something that was part of the miscellaneous luggage carried to support our Travels I went through a process of elimation until there was nothing left expect an empty vehicle.

Today I had the rear gate panel removed to expose the inner frame to find that the bolt holes for the bolts that hold the Spare tyre and its housing in place had cracks around most, from metal fatique, which was creating the now increasing "rattle" noise.

I guess from opening and closing gate, dirt road vibration etc. The design really does not give sufficent amount of support through what is a thin skin of metal sheeting.

Advise from my friendly panel shop is to weld a plate on the inside of the gate for better "counter lever" support etc. maybe a few hundreds in panel work :x :!:

Another option, obviously more costly, is to install a swinging steel arm to mount the spare on which in turn would be fixed to a steel bumper. :!: :!:

That's a bit nasty, after Mt Mee, I've starting hearing a noise from the rear too, thought it might just be the lock that needs adjustment, but I will check my mount too.

So, you took off the plastic lining on the interior of the rear door, and thats where you see the cracks????


I have a rattle, but, every now and then adjust my rear door bumpstops and it goes away. Have too thought about a spare tyre swing away.. Hmmmmmm...

I'll speak with my Uncle. he has an engineering place, might be able to organise sometrhing??? Also seeing him about rock rails..

Your uncle seems like he is a realllyyyy nice guy. Does he include the wonderful members of LOST as part of his family (particularly one on the GC with a Green 02 KJ) :wink: :wink: :roll: :?: :?:

It seems to me the design of spare tyre bracket fixing to the tail gate would be perfectly adequate provided that you only drove on the black top (i.e. motor/free way standard only or maybe to & from soccer practise) and accessed the rear compartment by the rear side doors only.

If you were to drive (heaven forbid) onto secondary blacktop roads .........or even dirt road with corrigations, 4wd bush tracks, pot holes etc. plus continual opening & closing of the rear gate it apparently creates unexceptable weight pressure on the thin metal skin of the gate, which is expected to carry all of the above forces via 3 or 4 nuts & bolts. :roll: :roll:

Hmmm Syd to the rock and my KJ... your not making that sound too good Greg.

As another option, you can get a wheel carrier that mounts onto the roof racks. Perhaps that would be a good idea, leaving the back tyre less... like STU's.

You could carry spare on the roof racks/basket, but that would cut back on the available space for other luggage tents, Fishing gear, etc.

I think the best option is a swing away. Rock lizard Fab have a good design which includes a swing away jerry can and hi-lift jack brackets. Unfortunately the exchange rate and freight do push it out of economical viability at the moment.

Aggreed, I like the concept of the rocklizard, but, there is a few things about how it looks that I'm not sur of... I did like the rear bar that was on No1 KJ, that SFA KJ that was for sale in Melbourne last year, Did anyone keep a piccy of it , the one that showed the rear carrier.... That was a nice rear end... :wink:

I gave Cheezy a call to see what it would cost to get one of those rear bar's made. $1600 to $1700, + extra for the swingaway. Not cheap, but looks good.

I have a few idea's about a rear bumper that can be made just using RHS,
still toying with some of the mounting's, but time really isn't on my side. I still haven't
even picked up my front bar yet. Atleast hoping to have my rock rail's made by Coff's.
