G'day,
Just wondering what sort of jack people use after they have put a lift in, and what point they use to jack from on the front of their KJ.
Do you get enough lift or do you carry a block of wood to get that bit extra ?
Where do you put it in your jeep and how do you secure it?

I talking about, out and about on tracks not in the workshor/shed.
TIA
Chris.

i usually have a block of wood under the rear seat to get that extra lift needed for the jack to work

I use a heavy duty three stage hydraulic bottle jack and sit it on a circular (300mm) 1/2" plywood base plate. I have a long tassie oak pole that I use to operate the jack. I can jack it up from several places in the front dependng on why you need to jack it up, for example under the lower control arm if just changing a tyre or fill under a tyre; under the engine cross member if looking to droop the suspension. My three stage jack provides enough lift that I can fully droop the entire front end by jacking under the front cross member (in the centre).

The base pad lives in my recovery kit bag, which lives in my cargo box which I carry in the rear cargo area. The bottle jack is also in that box. I have a safety net (hand woven from strong polypro rope) which is used to cover and tiedown the box to the tiedown points (via snap shackles). Even in a rollover that stuff will not move out of the net. Hope that helps.

Bought this off eBay - gets round the limited lift problem quite nicely.

Can you remember who the seller was ? I have been looking on e-bay but have not found a double lift jack like that one.

Does that mean you just use the factory scissor lift jack ?

Mine does not fit in the front jacking point properly. The mount point is not wide enough for the top of the jack, so I just sit it on the rail.
I have only had to use it in the shed so far and it looks like it's gunna fold in half side ways eventually.

I have a 4.5 tonne hydraulic bottle jack , also carry the lump of wood, for jacking on soft ground(dirt, wet grass, sand etc) . I jack the fronts from under the Lower control arms, locate the jack right below the clevis pivot bush, and the rear from under the rear axle, from the lower control arm mounts.

Looking at getting a Hi-lift because of my new rock-rails, also an exhaust jack for recovery on soft sand, mud etc..

A hyd bottle jack (similar to pipeliner's) has replaced the stockie. Also carry the bits of wood like the others.

When offroad, i carry a hi-lift. Use it off the arb bar or off the tow hitch (open rear door and insert lift jaw into the square receiver)

I've been thinking about fabbing a rear bar up and making a water jerry holder and jacking bar. (will still use the hitch receiver for recovery tho)
I pulled the rear plastic bumper off ( pita job) and there's nothing substantial behind it - so i'm thinking of using the tow hitch mounting location...

My bottle jack is exactly like Pipeliners, I think we bought them about the same time on ebay. That top screw out element is the supposed "third stage", and the trick is to unscrew it as far as possible before you jack up the other two stages. I also still carry my Jeep scissor jack in its usual place - good for low clearance situations where the bottle jack cannot fit.

And Eric I have been thinking about fabbing up a hitch mount carrier as well. I want something that could carry a jerry and a second spare tyre (desert trip dreaming I am).

Seller was
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
josephene113 <josephine113@hotkey.net.au>

She had quite a range, from 5 tonne up to 20 tonne. Can't find her on ebay now, but try sending her an email.

Cost was around $70.

Desert trip - yeah! Last year me and the missus went to central Oz and the KJ was PACKED!
The cargo area had 20L diesel, 80Lwater... etc.

I had a good look at the offerings from kaymar and have even considered buying a s/h one on ebay and pirating various bits and pieces off it.
The fiddly things like latches, strikers, arms, jerryholders etc would be too time consuming for me to muck around with.

The cradle i have in mind to fab would be bolted up with the stock 6 tow hitch bolts.
On each side a length of approx 50x50 RHS would protrude rearwards (through a cut-out in the bumper) and a cross member would join the two.
Overall a squared u-shape and the cross member slightly protruding behind the rear bumper. (but well within the limits of the rear tyre).

My focus is mainly for a rear hi-lift jacking location (for recovery purposes only) and to carry two water jerries.
I carry a second spare tyre carcass only - and it goes on the roof. I don't reckon that the KJ has sufficient width to carry two tyres side-by-side.

Two jerries, mounted longitudinally either side of the central spare wheel also fouls the ADR field of view requirements for the rear lamps - so will also have to incorporate those LED type ones into the cross member.

Shoulda seen the look on the wife's face when she saw me rip all the plastic bumpers/flares off the back of the KJ.
"I'm only giong to cut it here and here.. and stick that metal in here..." LOL

No need to cut the rear bumper If you are looking for something removeable could try something similar to what I have done.
You lose a bit of departure angle, but for touring you won't notice it.

Thanks aus-kj.
I remember reading about your desert trip and that set-up. It's pretty cool.

I was intending to leave the bottom bar section permanently on the car and still be able to use the hitch receiver.

My main thing is to be able to use a hi-lift at the back and i'd like the rear bar to be on all the time (otherwise i'd leave it at home likely)
Hmm . maybe a hilift holder would be good too.
Shame the rocklizard ones are so dear.

4 jerries! Did ya use them all on your trip?

Yep used every one of them plus part of a fifth stored in someone elses truck.
Fuel consomption was pretty crap as we were doing between 8 and 18kmh for 6-7 hours a day

Good luck with your rear bar I would love to see what you come up with in the end.
