I am planning on towing a uhaul trailer. one is 6x12 with a max gross weight of 4400 pds, am I pushing it with this trailer or should a go with the smaller 5x10 max weight of 2800 pds?

Both of these trailers have surge brakes and my jeep has the tow package. But it also has a lift and steel wheels wrapped with 31's, I was thinking about taking off the tires and putting my stock ones back on for the trip but since this is a one way trip I will have the 31's in the trailer.

What do you guys think?

What are you putting in it? 6spd or auto? if you are just loading it up to 2500# or so, do either one. 6spd has a limit of 3500#, 5k# for the auto.

I just towed a 3500 lb boat this past weekend on a trailer with no brakes. Towed it up some gradual inclines. It handled it relatively well. I must say though that up the inclines, it was a little sluggish. I can't imagine what it would be like if I were towing it over a summit in the Sierras.

I have an '02 renegade with the tow package. I didn't use a WD hitch on the advice that using it to tow a 17.5' boat would be overkill.

I think you can probably tow the 4400lb if you're not going over too many hills and if you're using a WD hitch. I hesitate to tow near the towing capacity of a car. If you're cautious, stick with the smaller one. Your kj can tow the 2800lb.

Not sure how lift will affect it though as my renny has none.

It is an auto and I am moving so I plan on loading it with household items. The majority of the stuff will be transported in one of those pods and eveything else in this trailer. I plan on having it pretty loaded up. But I am worried that 4400 pds might be pushing the 5k limit. I might just stick with the smaller one and hope it all fits.

oh and i will be cruising up 95 from FL to DE, pretty flat for the most part.

Regarding the wheels: If I was going on a one-way trip, I'd put the stockies on and cargo the steelies (you'd be cargoing the stockies anyway, right?). Put the wear/tear on the stockies.

You should be fine towing the 6X12, even if you load it up to max weight. You'd be better off with a 6X12 (GTW4400lbs) loaded with 3000lbs of junk, than you would be with a 5X10 (GTW2800lbs) loaded with 3000lbs. You're better off underloading the larger trailer than overloading the smaller one.

Make sure you get the right hitch drop to keep the Uhaul trailer level. With your lift, you might need a 2" drop (or more). The key is that you want the trailer to be level. This is pretty important and can make the different between an enjoyable excursion and a complete nightmare.

When you load the trailer, balance the load from side to side. Don't load all your boxes of magazines and books on one side and then stack the other side with stuffed animals.

Balance front to back as well. You want a bit more weight in front of the axles than behind (which gives you tongue weight), which is why the trailer's axle will probably be further to the rear. Load it evenly side to side and front to back.

Weigh the trailer if you have access to a vehicle scale.

Whether you can or can't weigh the trailer, definitely get the tongue weight and make sure it doesn't exceed your max before you head out. You said you have the tow pkg, so I assume you have the Mopar hitch receiver. This receiver is Class III and most of your ball-mounts will have a max tongue weight of 500lbs.

You can get your tongue weight with a bathroom scale. Just set a box on the scale and prop the trailer's tongue on the box. It's usually about 10-15% of the trailer's gross weight (if your loaded trailer weighs 3000lbs then your tongue weight will most likely be 300-450lbs). If your trailer's tongue weight exceeds your bathroom scale (which your's probably will unless you have a BIG scale), you can calculate it using this little handy dandy diagram of how to calculate tongue weight.

There are some great tips over at etrailer.com (click here to see them).

Good luck and be safe out there.

Dog_party covered it purty good. If you do get the bigger trailer, that doesnt mean its going to weigh 4400lbs, that just means thats what the trailer could hold. If you can fit all the stuff in the smaller trailer, go with it, if you cant, go with the bigger one.

I would switch the tires out for sure! It makes a world of difference when towing or evening driving around. I couldnt stand the loss of torque so had to take them back off.

I pull both .
I have an 18.5 center consoll it scaled at 36,560 without gas .45 gal tank and no ice in the coolers I pull it to the Keys twice a year. The travel trailer is 23 foot and is 34.00o unloaded so with gear and Groceries it gets
close to max. the BIG difrence is the frontal resistance it takes a lot more to pull the flat front travel trailer than my boat . it will pull them boath fine but it is easier with the boat. Us the smallest you can and it will be a better experience.
It will pull both just fine, with the boat it will do 65 / 70 easy with the overdrive locked out and it just about 2 miles to the gallon less. but the transmission does not overheat with all the shifting.
at the same speed i GET ABOUT 4 less with the TT trailer
just my experience

Thanks guys I feel pretty good about either one now. All I have to do is figure out just how much stuff I will have. I might be able to get away with the smaller one anyway.

Oh, so when I use the trailer I should have over drive on or off?

Off. Totally agree on putting the stockers on for the towing. With my MT/R's on, the spare gets in the way of the trailer hooking on. Unless it's my worn out spare, then it fits.
