I enjoyed your story and it's great everything came out alright. Just one thing: you said your first mistake was to try to do the run quickly. To me, doing it alone was the first. Don't ask how I know this.

Also, if you carried a tire plug kit, there's a more than good chance you wouldn't have had to change the tire in the first place. That is, if you had an inflation device too, highly recommended. But those can be pretty simple, like a CO2 device with a few cartridges. Or a manual pump. In a pinch, with double ended hose, you can bleed some tire pressure from each of the good ones into the bad. And the list goes on.

A plug kit is a good idea, but a waste on that tire, the cut was 3/4" across on the INSIDE of the tire. I took it to a shop to see if it could be salvaged, not. Would have wasted a lot of air trying to blow that sucker up. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Good point, add one more to my list. I felt that the road was traveled enough that it wouldn't be a problem. I was almost wrong. If it weren't for the motorcycles out there, we'd still be there.

That particular washboard road must have claimed its share of tires. I recall the trip from last year ... we saw a guy in a TJ driving that road with a flat. He lost two tires to that road, and as we went on our way we could see the tracks left by him on his way out.

MT/R? :)

Then there was the tourist couple from Europe who wanted to know if they could make it to Saline valley. They were in a rental car (passenger car), with 3/4 tank of gas, no extra gas, no extra water ... uh huh ...

Sometimes I think it's called DEATH valley for a reason ...

You wouldn't believe how many plugs you can get into a 3/4" hole and have it hold pressure. No, it's not good for long term but they can get you back. That's how many of us do trail tire repairs. No repair place would do that, though, but when you're on the trail... But you did have a good spare.

We should have a tire plugging demonstration on a large sidewall cut during one of our trips. Maybe Jeff can cut another tire for us? It is amazing how large a hole you can get sealed up to at least get you off the trail w/ a good plug kit.

Do you just keep pushing them in side by side? Doesnt it push the other one on into the tire? Ive got two plugs in my current tires and Ive had them in there for over 10kmiles with no problems. Ive never put more than one plug in one though.. :?

Yes, just keep pushing them in. I don't poke them in quite as far as I would when only 1 is needed; that way they can slide in a little further without going too far. Don't cut any ends off until all are in and the tire holds pressure and keep the pressure fairly low. Remember this is only a temporary fix on a sidewall. Repair places won't even put one in a sidewall much less several.

The last one looks like an ad for North Face or something like that. And by the way, yes I have done several stupid things in a row that I am fortunate to have gotten out of undamaged and unhurt.

What are these CDs you keep talking about?

PS: for those who don't know Burchie, he's the (professional, by trade) photographer who took these stunning pictures.
