I have 800kms (500miles) on my 06 Liberty CRD Sport and earlier today the check engine light came on.

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with operation. There is the slightest hesitation in power, but it was like that from when I picked it up. Basically, it takes off right away, but the real power comes on after about a second, but I just attributed this to the turbo spooling up.

Again, I can't really say anything is wrong with it, at worst maybe not quite as smooth and perhaps a little louder...but even then, only miniscule difference. But I can't help but be worried that the check engine light is on. There are two recalls on it when checked the Jeep website; lower ball joints, and and "Reprogram Body Control Module". Is it possible the second recall I listed could cause this? Is it possible I filled up with a low grade of diesel? I live in a smaller town where Diesel grade levels aren't an option. I'm basically using whatever Irving has to offer in the pump.

I bought the vehicle from a dealership 4 hours away (there are a couple DC dealers around, but I don't think either is CRD certified), so I'm going to get it in soon, but in the meantime I'm hoping it's nothing to be really alarmed about.

This is my first diesel vehicle (2nd Jeep) and I love it so far, but if anyone has any information to help me out it would be greatly appreciated!! Is there anything I should do now while it's new? What should I be keeping in mind in the future (aside from it's regular maintenance schedule)?

You can check to see if it is throwing any codes. If there is an Autozone in your area they will check the codes for free. Usually, if there is no serious jerking or drivability issues, it's something like the EGR. Good luck and sorry it happened so soon after you bought it. Actually, it's probably better early than late...

I would go to an Autozone if there was on nearby. The DC dealer here has never even seen a CRD before so I don't feel so confident in bringing it to them. There's an awesome diesel mechanic locally though, I should just go chat with him about it.

Update:

I went out last night and the CEL was off, and again this morning it stayed off. Should I still get it checked out, or should I be fine until it comes on again??

The CEL will go out, but the last code will still be set. Going to the dealer or the Autozone will provide the code. Even if the dealer doesn't have experience with the CRD, getting the code will not be a CRD specific issue. Hence, they should be able to diagnose the problem. Now, fixing the problem will be a new experience for them, but at least it is still under warranty.

No autozones in Newfoundland, if your in the city drop by the dealer (woodfords) they have a very compitent diesel mechanic on staff there. Granted the counter staff are uselessm, hence why I dont go there for any maintenance work, I go to a diesel shop instead. Gave them a copy of the maintenance schedule (schedule B for newfoundland) and all the specs for what oil, fluids and filters to use. This way I know the job is done right, and every invoice details exactly what work was performed for warranty purposes.
