Missing CV boot!

On Friday, I had my dealership replace a leaky pinion seal under warranty. While I'm waiting, the service advisor tells me that I'm missing an inner CV boot, and that he's ordered one for them to install ASAP. He asks if I've been there before. I say yes, about a dozen times since I bought the vehicle new there. They just put on new rear brakes 7K miles ago.

He says my extended warranty will cover the repair. I say great, but I'm wondering how this could have been missing for so long without anyone noticing. Advisor said "it could have come from the factory that way." Again, how this could have been missing for so long without anyone noticing? I'm really worried about the potential damage to my CV joint that could have occurred. I wonder if they could just replace the whole CV joint?

Has anyone else lost (or never had) an inner CV boot?

Thats amazing. How often do you take it offroad?

There is no way the cv would of lasted that long if the boot wasnt put on from the factory.

How many miles do you have on it? I would ask them about replacing the entire cv under warranty.

I check my CV boots as often as I can. More so if Im offroad in any mud where a stick could punch a hole in the boot. :wink:

Never heard of that. Did they say if there were any pieces/shreds left? Or the bands that attach them on??? That's just strange - something I don't check for but just happen to look at when I get my tires rotated...

Seems weird - I'd assume the whole shaft is a sub-assembly at the factory...

If the boot is off there's nothing holding the shafts together - you can pull them apart easily. Seems odd that someone at the factory would be able to hold it together and install it on purpose without the boot and let it go that way.

Also without grease that joint would really howl from on-road driving immediately I would think.

Maybe the dealer accidently tore it and is trying to include it in the warranty repair?

This is the explaination that I was thinking of giving. It's the most plausable since your Liberty was just in for Pinion seal service..

This hadn't crossed my mind until now, but it makes perfect sense. Probably a case of CYA at the stealership!

Jeepjeepster's right; if this had happened long ago, I'd have major damage by now. I bet they damaged it. :evil:

I'm not a frequent offroader, but recently I've driven through deep snow full of ice chunks. Wouldn't my engine skid plate protect this area? I inspect our KJ regularly, and I don't recall anything being out of place. Maybe I'm just not looking closely enough. (Not seeing the forest through the trees, ya know?) Like I said, I assumed the front skid would protect that area.

Yeah, it would be pretty hard to see something come up through the skid and make contact with that part of the front end... It would have to squeak by the crossmember, the skid, the control arm and anyother stuff that is in that general area.

Just make sure the dealer notes any damage to the CV itself on your recepit... But I bet once it's repacked there won't be any problems

I took pictures this morning. My untrained eye doesn't see a missing CV boot. Am I missing something?

Parts guy just called me to say my "special order part" arrived. When I scheduled the job just now, the service advisor told me it was a drive shaft that's being installed. I wish they'd get their story straight. I couldn't read the chicken scratch on that parts order, and the guy told me it was a CV boot. I'm dropping off the KJ Friday morning. I'll get the whole story then. This is ludicrous. I hope they actually ordered and received the right part. Like I said, my CVs look fine to me and are not leaking.

lol...you could tell the guy that there's a big difference between the shaft and the boot if he didn't already know. :lol:

Yeah, hopefully the driveshaft wasn't the missing part...LOL...sounds like anothe dealer to add to the do not use list.

You had best not pay for anything if charged. Even if not, get all the part numbers for the new stuff installed. Have them show you what they did.

Per your pix, you have both front driveshafts. If they are referring to your front propeller shaft being msising (the one that connects the front diff to the transfer case), then you would have NEVER been able to have 4 wheel drive work.

Seems like BS

Ohhhhhhhhhhh. Hes talking about the boot on the front driveshaft. That boot cannot be ordered separate.. Thats why they are replacing the entire shaft. :wink:

Anybody know how CV angles in picture are so straight. I have an 02 w/frankenlift and mine seem alot worse than most pics I see on this site. Any thoughts. For my thoughts on dealers see ABS sensor thread from yesterday/today. If this post is not supposed to go here feel free to remove, I am new to this.

You answered your own question. The cv angles are different on yours b/c you have a lift. One of the biggest lifts at that. :wink:

I thought his was lifted. Still mine seems worse than most I have seen pics of. If i knew how to attach a pic. i would.

His is, you are just lifted higher. The Frankenlift is about 3" and I believe he is running a 1.5" lift.
