Okay I have had enough of taxes and insurance to drowned a fish. I am driving to Southern Nevada in hopes to find some property and possibly relocating to Nevada. This will be my CRD's fist long trip she has 12k miles on the clock is an 06 built May 15th 2006 at 1pm. It is not under the TC recall and doesn't seem to exibit the studder like others have mentioned. it just had it's third oil change with rotella 5w40 synthetic. any other suggestions as to prepping it for the drive or things to increase fuel milage. Or suggestions for our trip and thinks to look out for will be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Jim

Where are you driving from? I drove my CRD from Delaware to Washington State and back last summer and may do same this year. I tried to limit driving to 12 hours each day or about 750 miles. If you do the ORM your mileage will be nice if you can keep it under 70 and won't have to change the oil as much.

I kept a extra 5 gallons of fuel with me just incase i couldnt find a station on my way to AZ. other than that I cant think of anything. before I left i changed my diff fluid to synthetic. I averaged about 25-26mpg going about 80mph.

I just got back Sunday morning from a 1900 mile trip. My CRD is a 2005 and it only had 8900 miles on it. I flew to Godfrey, IL to pick it up and then my father and I drove straight back to Spokane, WA. It took us 34.5 hours of driving. One of us would sleep while the other one drove.

The CRD did great. It had already had all of the recall work done, prior to picking it up (to include the F37). We averaged 75 mph most of the trip and got about 27 mpg. I was very pleased with the mileage.

Now that I'm home, I'm going to change all the fluids but this CRD ran great the whole trip and never really got a rest. I never had a problem finding diesel fuel either.

It sounds like your all ready for the trip. Be safe and enjoy, I know we did.

Consider taking an extra fuel filter with you. Chances are you'll never need it, but you never know.

Some type of Fuel additive - Probably like Power service...available at most truck stops.

Only get your fuel from major chains preferrably big name truck stops.....read No privates. Especially true if you cross reservations.......don't buy fuel there. Could be LSD not ULSD and no telling how much moisture and gunk.

Don't know why you'd need extra fuel. Buy brand new atlas(read - Not 2 or more years old) and watch road signs for fueling places. I drive NM, AZ, CO, UT all the time. Can think of once maybe twice when fuel is over 50+miles away....wouldn't want to carry around sloshing fuel behind me anyways.

Pillow, ibuprofren(CRD seats are painful on long trips.....not a lot of room to move legs around either)

Emergency kit with some tool essentials(screw drivers, adj wrench, hammer :D, sockets, allen wrenches, etc)

Fuel filter probably not a bad idea...but with major chains for fuel and PS, you probably won't have problem.

Hope you got plenty of CD's or Satelite radio.......long, long stretches with maybe one or two choices.......neither very good.

Vegas huh.....housing boom there finally slowed down, but be ready for sticker shock from Florida depending on which part of FL.

Good luck.......plenty of road trips in my life, don't drive tired......Plenty of places(Historic and otherwise just cool) to see on the way that you might never get to see again.....Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Petrified Forest and any other National Park...each has it's own little history....Route 66, cement teepees(Holbrook, AZ), world largest ball of twine, Wally World, etc.....Have FUN!

Sure don't want to forget the filter and some tool to change it. Glad I didn't have to do that on a trip. It's easiler to remove from underneath with a cup type filter socket. Otherwise you have to unplug everything under and around the filter to get the band type wrench on it. Then you have to worry that the fuel heater don't leak afterwards. Uggg don't get me started about the fuel filter setup..

A long trip in a CRD can be a daunting experience. The noise from the internet seems to suggest that the CRD prefers to fall apart rather than stay together. You would think that the car has factory installed entropy accelerators. But really this is not the case. Simply start the vehicle, stay between the lines, don't hit anything, and keep the shiny side up. You will be just fine. Enjoy yourself. Go by the Grand Canyon while you are at it. Stop in Texas and drink some Lone Stars. Go through New Orleans and spend money- they need it. And I don't even want to tell you what they have in Nevada. Just have fun.

Actually, I found it on Auto Trader and it was a private party sell. The CRD was in new condition and the navigation was a kick. I never thought I would want navigation but man was it cool and helpful getting home.

I agree with huxrules, the CRD is a great vehicle, and ran fine for me. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to simply start it, fill up the tank before I left town, and drive for days.

Really the only thing I would make sure to have with me is some type of roadside emergency kit and a flashlight. Not because I'm worried the CRD would brake down but because you never know when you're going to have to stop to help someone else out. Being parked on the shoulder of a 75 mph highway sucks without some flares or other type of warning device that you can throw out. On our trip home, we drove up on a collage aged girl who swerved to miss a bird, did a 360 and ended up down an embankment. We stopped and were able to pull off the side quite a ways but the rubberneckers are scary without some emergency reflectors or flares to give them some warning.

Again, enjoy your trip, I'm sure it will be trouble free.

Certaintly get you pick of the litter on autotrader.com - there are 374 used ones currently listed for sale.

As for driving across country - just throw a small bottle of Diesel 911 in the back and use it if you get a bad batch of diesel fuel - it will usually prevent the need to change a fuel filter on the road.

Check/replace the air filter. At 6500 miles mine was dirty enough to change it.

I know what I take if I were driving my CRD across the country. A SPARE CRD. Seriously, I dont trust taking mine on two hour trip. Its never ran more than two weeks without something breaking.

Not the K&N.

Get a Mopar filter or use a Napa Gold (wix) filter, which is what I use.

Looks can be deceiving when it comes to filters. It may look dirty on the surface from ccv oil contamination, but if you pull apart the pleats it is clean. I've seen filters that looked dirty that wouldn't budge a vacuum filter gauge at full throttle. But it's your money, do it for piece of mind. However that is much different than it needing to be changed. Unless you drive in extremely dusty conditions, 6500 miles is not very far on a filter.
