If biodiesel is cleaner, lubes better, and reduces deposits...why on Earth would a manfacturer not reccomend the use of it.

That's like saying, "You can only run used oil in your car or we'll void your warranty". Sheesh!

The token answer I hear most often is there is no regulation for Bio production....They have no way to know if you are using crappy stuff or good stuff.

I happen to trust my supplier....

You might want to be aware that this list may be monitored by Jeep, and contents herein used to invalidate warranty claims. Mind you, they'd try to invalidate *any* fuel-related issue as being caused by bad fuel, whether biodiesel or not. Besides, all diesel is biodiesel if viewed in light of geological time scales.

Oh crap, where's my tin foil hat

Actually, there is a specification for biodiesel. ATSM standards.

Now, what you brew in your garage may not have standards, but the stuff you buy retail should be tested and meet standards.

The highest blend of BD in my area is B11, although I usually run on B2 as the stations that sell B11 IMHO have crappy fuel. My MPG drops and my engine runs like crap when I use the aforementioned station's B11...

I occassionally run B2 - yep, 2% as that is about all I come close to on my travels.

Do you know if the B11 store sells a lot of fuel? Bio-D loves water and if they are putting into old underground tanks it may have more water in it than you would care to know. Not visable water... suspended water. Then there is the solvent nature of bio-d... lots of crud being cleaned off of old tanks.

I think B2 is just making up for the sulfer loss, is that right guys??

Quoted from another site:
The ASTM D975 standards for lubricity set the maximum amount of wear on materials when tested with specific fuels or blends of fuels. The test apparatus is called a High Frequency Reciprocating Test Rig (HFRR). Both No. 1 and No. 2 diesel test results cannot exceed 460 microns of wear when tested in a HFRR.

A lower wear score indicates better lubricity. Biodiesel has been tested at varying concentrations with No. 1 and No. 2 diesel fuels. The results indicate that a 1 percent blend of biodiesel with No. 2 diesels is sufficient to reduce the HFRR micron score below the required 460 micron standard. However, a 2 percent biodiesel blend is required in No. 1 diesel to get the HFRR micron score down to 460 microns.

So, yes, pretty much. 8)

I only have two local sources of bio. One sells B-20 for about ten to twenty cents above ULSD and the other sells B5 at about 10 cents above market price. Neither are easy for me to get to. When I do find a regular source if Bio I buy it, including B-100, if it is a reliable dealer. I have used B-5, B20, and B-100 all with good performance although the B-20 and B-100 cranks a bit more on start-up.

I pay 10 cents per gallon LESS than ULSD for B20. I have had no issues with it at all.

All the co-op's around here sell b5 for the same price as usld. I refuse to pay the same price, knowing it cost less to make.

How do you figure? I already run a fuel additive so the extra lubricity isn't needed. Less btu's=less mpg. More likely to receive bad fuel and paying extra for a product that is already subsidized by my tax dollars. Who's the greedy ones now?!

Actualy, less btu=less mpg is not entirely accurate. if two fuels of differing BTU's are burned in the same combustion chamber and have perfectly equal flash points, ignition temps, and cetane# then yes more BTU's equal more MPG, but when the duration of burn, ignition temp, flashpoint, and even lubricity factor are added to the equation the results may be turned upside down. consider that ULG, 93 octane gets significantly more mpg than 87 octane but both have roughly the same BTU#. when you have a slow burn throughout the combustion stroke (as in biodiesel) more torque is achieved, versus a quick bang which expends more energy in heat instead of mechanical energy. when we add the CRD's three injections per combustion cycle the process can be even more highly tunned. result... (well made) biodiesel in more fuel efficient than ULSD.

I talked to a tanker driver Thursday at a Murphy station. He indicated that Murphy was using up to 10% biodiesel in Tulsa pumps. The stations I usually fill at have biodiesel stickers on the pumps. In Jan. I talked to a driver that said Murphy was using USLD and had been since Oct. I do not know if either is right.
