I say why worry
we all own JEEPS and they are not known for their great MPG

I dont care what milage the jeep gets my TJ gets ~16 on the highway and ~14 city
the KJ pre-MTR's ~16 city and 22 highway now.......

14 city and 18 highway

But I knew that going in
I knew that the mpg would tank but I could care less we like the way it looks and dont mind driving it
If we were worried abput mpg we would be like my brother's ,thats right both of them, and buy scion's
the funny looking boxy XB things now 1 of them has a YJ on 35's with some of the goddies like 4.56's and he knows about bad mpg ,10 in the city
but the XB 40+ mpg in the city and he drive that funny looking thing every day

I still drive it like I did the day I bought it nothing has or will change
We are however having second thoughts about buying some thing with a big honking V8 as a tow rig
but I think that the CRD Grand would tow the TJ easy and the KJ if needed and still get great MPG when not towing
but the $35K+ price will be a hard pill to take

I am riding my bike to work at least once a week. More due to exercise than to save gas money.

So far this tank, I have been in 4 Hi since last weekend when I went camping. The first 60 miles were highway, but I have done 25 more city and I am still up around 17.7 mpg. Normally in 2WD, I am looking at 16.5 mpg.....per the EVIC info. Further testing is needed to determine if the 4Hi is worth staying in.

PSI = 37
Loaded down with my off-road containers
Skids + All J skid
Skink Sliders
RL rear steel bumper
Moabs + MTRs
Reny lights and roof rack
Driving with a lot of hills/mountains
Drag and a lot of extra weight.

I work 45 miles away from home but I don't work everyday like most people. I work for the Union Pacific Railroad. So I'm on call 24/7. This week I got home on Sunday and won't work again until maybe Thursday. So I don't drive the Jeep much in between. Pretty much run around in the wifes PT curiser 30mpg. The wife works about 3 days a week but she drives an '97 F350 Diesel for work. When I do go to work I pretty much keep it at the speed limit, if I do that I get 20mpg in the Jeep. Not about to change either. I need a 4X4 in the winter so might as well have fun with it. :)

I think most people go into buying a Jeep knowing that it will not give them the most MPGs but know that they are buying something to take them off road or at least to the 7-11 when the snow is 6 inches deep  so they dont look for 30 MPGs. The KJ is the 17th 4WD that I have owned and I know I am going to drive them regardless. Way back when... before when gas was almost rationed, had to sit in lines to get gas, I was driving a full size Ford short bed 4WD with 38s for my daily driver! So you deal with it. Its like any hobby ya gotta pay to play!

I would like to see (and will) gas prices climb to $5+ a gallon with minimum wage at $5.15 and watch the entire economy colapse while I drink a Sam Adams Black Lager and eat smors over my campfire.

A plus to that would be less traffic for me to drive in when I go out to play.

Gas is far less $$$$ than bottled water or beer.   :P

I say its time to raise the min wage and the price of a Big Mac by about $4 each. That would help get rid of fat kids because the food is so cheap its the only way they can afford to be fed because fast food is cheaper than healthy stuff.

I told yall before to invest in Gas & Oil companies and weapons manufacturing. It is, what it is, and...will be more of the same. There are analyst out there that know exactly what the market will bear.

Don't worry, It will all end when JESUS comes back.

Be ready   John 5:24

Just readin' along and thought about gas/diesel (fuel in general) prices I can remember. By the way, my Liberty gets driven by me, I'm pretty heavy footed, all week and a little on the weekends and however I drive it, it's gonna do better than my AV. So, no, my driving habits are horrible and haven't changed as a result of gas prices. I use the a/c constantly, hit it hard from the go and love every noisy roll of my MTRs. Honestly, I don't like the prices of gas but I'll sacrefice it for the safety of my wife and kids. Our other vehicle, hers, is a 4x4 Z71 Avalanche which does fine mileage-wise... relatively speaking. "Relatively" is the operative word. It doesn't get great mileage in the scheme of things but I bought it cause it is big and safe... and it's a CHEVY! The Insurance Institute's crash studies test and show vehicles crashing into moving and stationary solid square walls at 30mph, not rolling and rounded bendable fullsize SUVs coming at me at 70mph. That's a 140 mph crash if we're on the freeway in a head-on. I know people who've lived to tell such a story from the safety of their big gas guzzlers. In contrast, I've never heard anyone tell about how well their hybrid held up in a similar crash OR how great it is to get 60mpg; it's probably because they aren't alive to talk about it.
Just a thought... :?:

Yeah, rubigade, safety is a good thing. I've got my ARB bumper up front, and that can't be helpful for gas mileage, but I believe it'd be an advantage in the event of a crash. My KJ is lifted, too, and with the heavier A/T tires I can say I haven't actually done anything to improve my mileage -- just the opposite. But it's a better vehicle now, IMO. Fortunately, I work at home so I don't actually HAVE TO drive. But I still do: it's a great and fun vehicle to drive.

My son was ejected during a roll over some years ago and the vehicle landed on top of him and he was under there for 45 minutes with hardly a scratch.

I saw a Z-71 go under a dump truck and the chevy driver died.

My cuzins jet ski popped up and hit him in the chin and knocked him out. His life vest was the "COOL" kind, not the ugly face up kind...He Died.

You'll go when its your time...Just know where your going

It makes me feel better with a little added protection too, dispite the MPG.

I totally agree that the KJ is a fantastic vehicle.. We all love them, otherwise we wouldn't be lost now would we? :D

Being in Detroit there is a serious recession going on so that might have something to do with my feelings about gas when compared to areas that are prospering like Arizona. I drove the KJ today and it's got 199.4 miles on the trip meter with a little over 1/4 to go. With my new driving habbits though, that 1/4 will probably last me right into the July 4th holiday week. Where as before that amount of gas would have been gone by Sunday

Generally speaking my driving habits haven't changed much. I've never been hard on the skinny pedal and when I'm out running errands, I've always try to consolidate my trips (ie. go to the shopping center with the grocery store and the pharmacy rather than two separate places). However I have noticed lately that when I get a late night craving for ice cream, I find it hard to rationalize a trip out just for that. Instead, I'll stay home and find something else to satisfy my sweet tooth. By the way, I remember paying less than a dollar a gallon just a short seven years ago.

Yes, I'm cutting back from ~36000 mpy to maybe 33000 mpy. Typically it's at that 4th weekend of the month when I think, Gee I've driven a lot this month, I should take a break. Sometimes I get 20 mpg on the interstate, and inexplicably sometimes I get 15 mpg. Found I really hate US 50 going to South Lake Tahoe; the grade and hill lengths are such that I'm at a whiny 3900 rpm to get to 65 mph. On I-80 to Donner summit, I can go an unwhiny 3000 to 3400 rpm as needed to get 75 to 80 mph.

Hey guys, I agree with you all. In response to one, you're right. When it's your time... there's little you can do about it.
Too, it's amazing how fast things change. I just bought a new 4x4 Z-71 Suburban today for my wife, you know, to replace the Av? We got another (3rd) on the way and I thought what the heck. I'd rather have it now than later. I loved my Av but this Sub is awesome!!! Black on the outside... Black on the inside! I got the paperwork done by 6pm, put 145 miles on it after that going to dinner and back and get this... 19 mpg on the trip computer! And that was gittin' some of them 310 horses too. I'm itchin' to see how it's gonna do with 4 4 wheelers and a lowboy behind it this Summer when we go to Red River!
Sweetness!

Eh......that's why I'm driving a CRD doing 30 MPG.

Diesel/gas prices over here are over $8 a Gallon so driving a Petrol KJ is not very wise and difficult to sell on again and in fact the petrol KJ is discontinued over here.

I don't know if its the price of gas or the fact that if I get 1 more point on my license they get suspended but I've slowed down to the 65-70mph speed limit these days and am getting better gas mileage. I still accelerate faster than most off traffic lights tho.
