According to wikipedea "In atmospheric chemistry the term NOx is used to mean the total concentration of NO plus NO2. During daylight NO and NO2 are in equilibrium with the ratio NO/NO2 determined by the intensity of sunshine (which converts NO2 to NO) and ozone (which reacts with NO to give back NO2). NO and NO2 are also central to the formation of tropospheric ozone."

Nox helps the ozone layer thereby reducing UV radiation and skin cancer. The acid rain problem in China in not from NOx but rather from sulfuric acid produced from coal fired plants without scrubbers. nitric acid can not exist for more than a short time in the atmosphere because it is broken down by UV radiation into Ozone and Ammonia(good for the trees). Simple chemistry. By the way smog problems in the US started disappearing when sulfur was reduced in petroleum and scrubbers were added to coal plants. more NOx is now produced in the US than in the 70's and 80's when smog was at its worst.

All I know is that if I am trapped in a garage with a vehicle running I hope it is a diesel (NOx) and not a Gasser (CO2).

Just keep it informative and level headed and this thread will remain open to all...Those who purchased thier CRD for environmental reasons, MPG reasons, towing reasons, alternative fuel reasons and even those who didn't know any better...ALL ARE WELCOME!!!

That's what makes diesels so great. They can be environmentally friendly, economical, powerful, and more reliable. There really isn't a downside to them that I can see.

We've all seen diesels blowing plumes of black smoke, but those are either older engines, or ones that have had their power output "boosted" and they are getting more fuel than they can burn thrown at them.

Only time I have ever seen the CRD blow smoke was right after startup, backing uphill on a 30% incline.

Also got that tranny noise.

If you're trapped in a garage - either turn the thing off - or do a Hollywood drive through the door.
no O2 is no O2 - doesn't matter what you're replacing it with - although the CO that either produces will bind the hemoglobin in the red blood cells and prevent Oxygen transport even if there is some there.

All we need to do is transform the NOX into Nitric Oxide and dilate our blood vessels; then, we will all be very happy. When this happens, disabling our EGR circuits would be very very good for the environment.
Note: Discussing why the Nitric Oxide dilating our blood vessels makes us very happy is not Politically Correct.

Interestingly my local emissions testing center (one of only four Countys in Tennessee which tests) no longer checks harmful gas emissions in diesels. They put a sniffer on the tailpipe to check particulate emissions only, of course the CRD,s smoke is too low to even register on their machine and it gives a zero reading. Ha ha, this so called technician is the same cerebrally atmospheric individual who did not want to let my 81 diesel Jetta pass because it did not have a catalytic converter on it.

The thought of tree (or cow) hugging hadn't entered my mind. I'm just a cheap SOB and wanted good mileage from something that should run past warranty. Originally I was looking at a VW TDI. After Hurricanes Wilma and Katrina trapped me at my house for nearly a week I figured sedans were impractical vehicles for escaping the hurricane aftermath -- driving over curbs, medians, and tree stumps. Hence the Jeep.

Interesting concept. But my gestapo homeowners' association wouldn't appreciate it. Maybe after a couple years of year-round water restrictions they'll change their minds.

We no longer gave gasoline emissions testing(I assume CNG, LNG, propane etc as well) but we still have diesel emissions, its only an opacity test. at 60mph the CRD was at 6% of allowable.

ya, that was with the EGR plugged in, they wont pass it if it shows a code, or check engine light.

{Hurricanes} I agree. When I was looking for a suitable replacement for
my '92 F150, the CRD fit nicely into my worst-case-scenario plan.
It's an all encompassing contigency plan that I have secretly
dubbed "PLAN B."

Hey, I have a couple of "Plan Bs"

I have a general contingency plan for getting out of here quickly should the need arise, environmental, social, political, nuclear or 4 horseman.

I have a route planned for north south east and went. Though my west, north and east plans are best. I have a list of things that I will bring.

My main problem is it would take about 30 mins to get myself out. Since alot of my gear is stuff I use, tools, sleeping bag, etc. Its not all in one place.

Even if I have warning and it takes me some time to get everything together......Im worried that will put me fleeing with everyone else if I was able to get out and go quickly I would put myself ahead of the herd.
