Goodyear MT/R vs. BFG Mud Terrain

differences? preferences? These tires seem so similar, any deciding factor besides brand? I know the goodyears stand for maximum traction/rock, which is not muddy terrain, but after looking at the tread patterns, the differences seem very slight to me. Goodyears might have better sidewalls, but anything else you guys know please discuss.

Just looking at them I would say the Goodyear might have better traction. I'm looking at how the center 2 rows of tread are placed. They are a little more in a side to side direction.

I have the Goodyears and I like them a lot. I have not compared them to anything else though.

My experience is go with the Goodyears....Quieter, better traction, better wear....

I didn't know that the concepts of Goodyear MTR's and quiet can fit in the same sentence, cognitive dissonance.

although it might be quieter as a comparision to say jet engines on takeoff - or chainsaws.........

the MTR's are great off-road, I haven't tried BFG's.

Between the MT/R's and the BFG MT's,you'd be much happier with the MT/R's,a overall better tire.Are they loud? Yes,but both are.Do they wear good? Yes if you rotate every 3000 miles and keep a good alignment.The MT/R's are good in the mud,contrary to what anybody else will say,you need some wheel spin though to make them work in the mud.Believe it or not almost every place that rates tires(offroad magizines) rates the MT/R's higher in every catagory(including mud) over the BFG MT's.I ran BFG MT's on my Blazer when mud drag racing and had alot of problems with punturing the sidewalls,switched to Interco Boggers and no more problems.I also ran 3 sets MT/R's on 2 Jeeps for over 100,000 miles with zero issues,no flats,no tears,no nothing and I play in the rocks alot.My vote is for the MT/R's,again just my 2 cents.

I have the BFGs on all my jeeps. They work great everywhere except steep sand hills. They tend to dig in on loose sand hills. They wear pretty good for a mud tire about 50,000 miles.

i have the firestone destination mt's and love them. Nice little hum on the road and excellent off road. Also is #1 on the tirerack tire list.

the MTR's are great off-road, I haven't tried BFG's.

They're quiet to me....the Bronco has 38" SX's on it :wink:

MAXXIS Buckshot Mudders worked great on my old KJ and were less expensive than others. Nice stiff sideway and lasted on the road too.

I am glad someone mentioned rotating every 3000 miles...I do that religiously and work the spare in the rotation...definitely helps longevity and even wear patterns.

I cant help but notice the lack of siping on all of these tires, do they suck on wet/icy/hardpacked(snow) roads? It snows 7 months out of the year where I live so I would also like to know how these tires (or any other MT type) performs in snow conditions.

I'd trust the tirerack reviews for that info... here you might have a handful of people who use tire 'a' or 'b' but tirerack has hundreds of reviews on each tire. Just look at the chart I posted earlier.

And, on another note, what is everyone feelings on a MT such as the goodyear or firestone vs. the bfg commercial T/A traction. The latter seems like a great choice for where I live, as we don't have too much mud (I prefer to stay out of deep mud anyways) and lots of snow during the winter, ranging from deep (up to 2 feet on the road sometimes before it gets plowed) to hard packed and ice.

Ive read lots of reviews on the commercial t/a traction and people seem to love it for the wet stuff (has tons of siping), and it does good off road as well. Some consider it the middle ground between an AT tire and a MT tire.
