I know I have seen a discussion on this before but I cant locate it, I know the size will fit without any problem just wanted opinions.

Thinking of switching for 245/70/16 to 225/75/16 because I like the wider stance look. Are there any benefits to staying with 245's verse dropping down and getting wider and would 225 look tiny on the jeep? I think I remember seeing that the wider footprint is better for traction.

2002 pre-lowered limited, no lift.

Thanks

P.S. If anyone is running these and has pics please feel free to post.

Between those two is the 235/75/16...fits most KJ's that are stock. If you are pre-lowered you would probably be set with that size.

Darby - I know, I was very tired when I posted that. I originally meant to post dropping down to 235 from 245, not 225. Sorry for the confusion.

0311_Doc - I know about the tire chart, I check it frequently :D I was just wondering what benefits or differences there would be, I wasnt worried about them fitting but thank you for the reference.

Would 235-75-16 make any difference in performace or anything? I dont remember what my KJ looked like with 235's, I was looking for a wider stance without lifting. I thought I saw something about better onroad performance too when switching to 75 vs 70.

Perhaps I'm mis-reading your statement, but 235s would ALSO be narrower than 245s... first number is the width of the tread in mm. Second is height of the sidewall represented as a percent of the first number. Third is rim diameter in inches.

So:
.75 * 235 = 176.25 == 17.6 cm sidewall height
.70 * 240 = 171.50 == 17.2 cm sidewall height

I'm not trying to be condesending or anything, just that sometimes math is the clearest language :)

narrow tires work better in mud and slop over wide tires. wide tires will give a bit more stability on the road.

245's will be the widest tire you can put on your stock libbey without rubbing. 255 might fit, but rubbing will be there...unless you go with a shorter sidewall, but rub might still be an issue because of the width hitting the flares...255/65/16s are only 0.1" larger in diameter (29.1) over stock 235/70s, but are 20mm or a full inch wider.
