I decided to make a transmission skid when the dealership informed me that the DC skid was not available.

The cutting and welding was done by a friend, I made the template. Details are in the fabrication forum.

Thanks to the members here I will attempt the CCV filter next, still getting installation ideas. Don

"transmission skid when the dealership informed me that the DC skid was not available"? I put mine on last Saturday. Part No. 8221003 $53.04 after TTL. The fit was perfect from the front skid over the oil filter, transmission and to the cross member support to the transfer case. It even has the indentation for the vulnerable oil filter. It does not look as good as yours but it did take some beating on Sunday at a Land Rover event (my son has an old Disco II). I put on the off-road tires and wheels at went every where the expensive Disco / Ranger Rovers went. I am glad that the Jeep had front, tranny, transfer and fuel skids. All of them had pretty good scrapes as well as the rock sliders. I may have to make a skid for the muffler which is no longer perfectly round if you get my drift. BTW the CRD was a hit at the Land Rover event. This is not the first time off road with the Jeep but this was some serious mud, gravel, mounds and long hills at an abandoned grave strip mining pit. No I know what “Love That Torque” means.

Got all mine by noon the next day from my DC stealership. Took about 1 1/2 hr to put them all on. The fueltank skid took almost half the time with the hitch to put back up. Originally thought mine came with the engine skid on it, but a closer inspection showed it was a piece of sheetmetal to hold the sound dampening material up. Seems to me the skid wouldn't have cost that much more for them to install as the sheetmetal is bracketed and formed exactly like the skid, just thinner.

I have the factory "skid plate group" on a CRD that was built May 2005. It is listed on the window sticker as such:

Skid Plate Group
  • Transmission Skid Plate
  • Front Suspension Skid Plate
  • Fuel Tank Skid Plate Shield
  • Transfer Case Skid Plate Shield
  • Tow Hooks

Here is what I am assuming is the transmission skid looks like that is on it... Click on the descriptions for larger pics...

Bubba I checked with local dealer today and was told it was not available yet and it would not be available till Nov, it was same part # you listed. Guess I need to check with another dealer.

I undertook this project only because I was told that the skid was available then DC pulled the part number and they did not know when it would be available.

I would have preferred to stay with DC skids all the way around. It was a very confidence inspiring project for someone not accustomed to this line of work.

I would not have done it without the posts on this forum describing modifications you have made. Thank you, Don

oldnavy - weird. All I did was call up my dealer Deerbrook Chrylser / Jeep and asked if they could order that part number. They said yes but it would come from "Out West"(?) and four days later the called me and it was in. It looks exactly like the pictures osted by valkraider.

Called MOPAR Supercenter http://www.moparsupercenter.com/ and ordered the skid plate for $44 plus shipping ($9.90) for total of $53.90 and should be here by this coming Friday. Funny thing is you left out a 0 on the P# and they corrected me and gave the correct number 82210003 and I went out to the Jeep and checked in the OM where I have put several other part numbers and the local dealer had the correct number. I'll not be ordering anything from local dealer, in the future MOPAR Supercenter will get all my business

The REALLY funny thing is that the tranny skid in those photos in the EXACT SAME skid plate I put on my CRD under a different part #. I only paid $28.00 for my plate at the dealer, had it in three days, and the part # was completely different. Mine bolted right up to existing holes, but I don't like the factory hardware they give you.

Yeah those "nutzerts" or rivets were a pain. Next time I will drill the hole all the way through and use nuts and bolts instead.

Yeah, mine has a recess for the oil filter, hole for the drain plug, and is double layered for reinforcement. I was shocked when the dealer said, "That'll be $30 and some change tax included." And I was even more shocked when I had it in three days. I'm very pleased.

Now I just need the t-case and fuel tank and I'll be set. 8)

Same here. Wife has been known to jump curbs and run over 4x4's in the road in her VW, it had the full steel rally skid plate from VW racing.

LOL. That's hilarious. My wife has jumped a few curbs, hit my mirrors backing out of the driveway, and she's been known to go airborne over culverts and back into pickup trucks. I'm thinking maybe a stainless steel car like the DeLorean would be a good idea for her.

On a serious note, the skid plates are nice, even ON the road. Just last week someone lost a mattress out of the back of their pickup truck in two lanes of rush hour traffic right in front of me. I was able to swerve and miss it, but some others weren't and ran it right over. Still, it made me thankful for skidplates. The plates might not stop whatever it is, but they will sure slow it down.

Mine didn't come with the "nutzerts" but they will be here Tuesday and I was wondering how they install. Any special tool required or do they just expand and grip when the bolt is screwed in? I was tempted to drill and use the 3" bolts, but I think the T-case bolts to the cross member and the frame so I might need to do the "nutzerts" anyway. The local dealer says it shows a special tool required but has no availability as yet.

Liberty CRD, did some research. Looks like 52128925AC is for the 2004 and has been replaced by 82210003. So to make sure I understand this correctly, the CRD has the front skid plate already. We just need the above plate to cover the oil filter (that's all I'm really worried about - I'm not into wheeling but we do go hiking on some crumy roads so want to protect the oil filter)?

No!! Your CRD has a piece of sheetmetal that looks just like the skid plate that holds the sound dampening material up. The skid plate is about 3 time thicker material. The skids come with everything you need to put them up, including the fasteners and washers.

My skid plate that came on the CRD is Steel about 1/8" thick, not sheet metal or plastic and the Tranny skid that I just bought (82210003) is steel and weight is about 30 lbs at least, and it didn't come with any mounting hardware and is the same thickness as the front skid plate.

Does anybody have any other pics of what the nutzerts look like when installed or just plain bolts. I am getting a stock tranny skid from a fellow member, but I wont be getting the hardware to install it. So what are my options? Can i go to the dealer and get the required parts to put it on? Or just start drilling  ???

Yes, you can order the nutzerts seperate from the dealer. My transfer case skid plate came with the nutzerts, bolts and nutzert tool. Pretty nice for $43 I thought.

While I'm certain you did a nice job on the skidplate, from the looks of things, the plate you crafted is only 1/8" steel (if that) with 2 pieces of 1/8"x1x1" angle iron welded to the sides. This should deflect mud, and 'road gators' as Oldnavy calls them, but I would not expect it to do anything else. If you hit a rock or put any real stress on it, expect it to just buckle. Single thickness, flat 1/8" sheetmetal is just not strong enough to do the job. The factory skid plate is not much thicker, but is double layer, and is bent into a complex shape that offers significant reinforcement.
