anyone know much about our 242 t case? I mean is it a weak point like the 231np in a YJ or is it a more heavy duty case like a 241np? Does anyone make a 4:1 for it? My KJ doesn't like to crawl. It's more of like a slow walk  Anyone try installing a Atlas?

CommandTrac is an NV231, SelecTrac is an NV242.

The NV242 is fairly strong, but some people have managed to break the planetary gears in it. According to New Venture the NV242 can handle up to 1486 ft.-lbs. of torque, whereas the NV231 can handle 1885 ft.-lbs. That being said, I wouldn't exactly consider it a "weak point."

TeraFlex's TeraLow 4:1 kit for the NV231 will work on the NV242.

The 241 will not work and not really a good combo with an auto anyway.

The 242 in the KJ is differnet from most 242. The clutch pack and cage is a smaller size and has had some problems in the past. I have not heard of anyone yet doing any damage to the 231 in a KJ.

Hope that helps. later...Clint

I've read somewhere that it is a NV242 also, but I'm sure it is beefed up quite a bit. A hummer is HEAVY. A couple of people I use to wheel with weighed their hard-top hummers (the pick up style) and they topped over 8000lbs. I think one said his weighed in at 8150lbs.

Interestingly enough they have really small steering boxes. Looked identical to the one in my CJ and I guess it's quite common to break them. They carry extra steering box parts with them on the trail.

He hit a small stump going only a couple miles an hour.

The HMMVW and Hummer H1 use an NV242HD without the 2WD option.

The 242HD is designed to handle 2028 ft.-lbs. It's also quite a bit larger and it takes 6 pints of fluid vs. 2.85 for the regular NV242. I'm guessing that most of the increased size is just for oil capacity, as it only weighs 4 lbs. more than the regular NV242 (90lbs vs. 86lbs.)

The NV231 for comparison only weighs 65lbs. and takes 2.5 pints of fluid.

An uparmored HMMWV is roughly around 10,000lbs. Those are the ones that the MP's ride around in. Others that have different equipment may weigh more or less, however I'd say they probably can't handle much more then 10,000lbs or they won't be so Highly mobile anymore.

I believe the Hummer case is made of magnesium-I could be wrong but I have driven a few (been in a year and a half) and my buddy who is an Army mechanic (63B) mentioned something of that.
