So, I got the next few days off and a 78k mile Liberty limited 4x4.....
oh, and all this stuff....
Image

Here I go, chime in with any suggestions or concerns.

First, the Transfer Case fluid change. I read a few posts and came up with this.
Image
First, grab a 3/8 allen head ( I used a 10mm)
Then , loosen the top plug to allow airflow
Next, Remove the lower drain plug and allow fluid to drain into the oil catch. let this drain completely
Image
Now reinstall the lower plug and remove the top filler plug
Image
Then add the hose attachment and put the tube right inside the upper hole opening
Image
Now fill the case with fluid. Mine took 2QTs (I had to add just a tad from a 3rd bottle just to make up for the little bit that you cant squeeze out of the bottle.

Again, please chime in if I miss something or do something wrong....this is my first time doing any of this.

Next....the front differential....

so, I got the (2) Mobil 1 75w140 synthetic gear lube for the front. an 8mm allen wrench, and a 3/8" rachet
Image
So I unscrew the bottom diff bolt with the allen head and let it drain completely
Image
Next, replace the bottom plug and remove the top filler plug with the ratchet
Image
Now, just fill the top with the gear lube...I had to really put it at an angle and squeeze it all out.
Image

Now, I have read they need 1.9QT but mine only took 1.6 and overflowed. thoughts? I put the filler plug back in and called it a night.

please let me know what you think.

Tranny is next, how to's photos, anything...i dont konw anything about the trans or these 2 tranny filters i got.

How much did you spend, and how long did it take?

Sometimes the front diff will take a bit more after you drive it around a bit.

Make sure you have the right tranny filters for your tranny. The 45RFE uses 2 filters while the 45RLE only uses 1. Most auto places just give you the 45RFE set-up because.....well because they are just retarded.

Edit*** The easiest way to tell what transmission you have it to count the bolt heads on the tranny pans, The 45RFE found in 2002 and some 2003 models has 15 bolts. The 45RLE found in 2003+ models has 13 bolts. Do not pay attention to the shape of the cross member or PCM module connectors as things changed here n' there during the early years and may just confuse you.

My transmission says RFE on the side so I assume its a 45rfe so I got both filers. one looks like a mini oil filter, and the other is a wierd shaped one. Does anyone have a write up or pics on how to get to these, and how to take care of the tranny job?

btw...prices
Gear lube - Mobile 1 75w140 was expensive - $15 qt (need 2 QTS in the front and apparently just over 2 in the back - not to that part yet)
ATF+4 was at Advanced Autoparts and was around $4 a QT
the little hose adapter was like $3

transfer case job was like 30 mins including drain time....soooo easy
front diff, just a few minutes longer, squeezing that thick gear lube out took a bit longer..both bery easy jobs though

Great write-up. I recommend a small hand pump for the gear oil. It's a piston pump that fits in the bottle and has a long tube for output. Makes life WAYYYY easier for the diff oil changes.

If you have a limited slip you will need a friction modifier. I think most full synthetic gear lubes have a friction modifier mixed in. You only need it if you have a limited slip. Look on the driver side rear axle tube for a sticker. It will say something along the lines of "3.73 TRAC-LOC" or something. If it says "3.73 OPEN" you don't need it.

The worst part in changing the transmission is dropping the pan. I was thinking of installing a drain plug. Anyone do that?

i guess you could do that, but you would have to take the pan off anyway to change the filter

ok, so i drove it for a few days and then went back to put the rest of the fluid in the front diff....it overflowed last time and i only got about 1.6 bottles in it....this time I even jacked up the rear to get a bit more leverage...but still...only was able to put a little bit in before it started overflowing.

so, my front diff only took about 1.7 / 1.8 qts of fluid....should i be concerned?

i dont think so

Engine = 5 quarts = 5W30

Transmission:
45RFE (2002 only) = Drop pan = 5 quarts = ATF+4
42RLE (2003-07) = Drop pan = 4 quarts = ATF+4

Transfer Case:
NV231 (Command-Trac) = 1.5 qts = ATF+4
NV242 (Select-Trac) = 1.7 qts = ATF+4

Axles:
Front = 1.31 qts = 75w90 (street) or 75w140 (towing/offroad)
Rear = 2.19 qts = 75w90 (street) or 75w140 (towing/offroad)*
if you have a LSD/Trac-lock you need 4oz of a friction modifier.

But you could drain the fluid first, so ~5 qts of fluid doesn't dump all over you when you take the pan off.

Yep, it would make sense to have that drain in there even if you were going to take the pan off for the filter. I haven't done this myself yet, but I have all the fluids, RTV and the filter ready. I read up in the FSM about doing this and is seems like it's going to be messy. That pan isn't that big, though, and I have one of those oil change pans to put under there, so we'll see how it goes.

I'm going to track down a drain plug before I go ahead, and if I end up making a big mess, I'll install the plug. If it's not that bad, I won't bother. I'd actually rather not install the plug, just one more place for the Jeep to leak someday.....
