The Penske Corp. has sold its 50 percent equity stake in an Italianmaker of diesel engines to a Russian carmaker for an undisclosed sum.

Bloomfield Hills-based Penske is selling its portion of VM Motori, S.p.A. of Centro, Italy to GAZ, one of Russia's largest carmakers.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but VM Motori had sales of about $600 million last year.
The agreement makes GAZ a partner with General Motors Corp. in VM Motori. GM had acquired a 50 percent stake in VM Motori from Penske in the summer of 2007. GAZ is partly owned by Russian aluminum tycoon Oleg Deripaska, who last year acquired a large stake in Magna International Inc.
"We will retain management control," said Sharon Basel, a spokeswoman for GM's Powertrain Group in Pontiac. "We've had management since we purchased the 50 percent control from Penske last year.
"We believe this does provide an opportunity to expand the customer base of VM Motori in Russia and other areas as well," Basel said.
Prior last year's purchase of a controlling stake from Penske, GM had collaborated for more than 10 years with VM Motori in supplying engines for its Opel brand products and in a technology agreement with GM Daewoo.
In addition, the GM-VM Motori partnership has developed a new 2.9-liter V-6 turbo diesel scheduled to launch in the Cadillac CTS in Europe in 2009, and produced agreements for the manufacturing of VM Motori diesel engines in Thailand and Mercosur.
"Diesel engines have a very important role in GM's global advanced propulsion strategy," said Mike Arcamone, vice president, GM Powertrain Europe.
"Our joint venture agreement with GAZ Group provides business opportunities to expand our diesel engine business with new customers," Arcamone said.
Last year, VM Motori produced 96,000 engines and 80 percent were exported to Opel and other customers around the world, Basel said.
"This equity ownership agreement enables GAZ Group to access world-class diesel engine design and manufacturing," said Sergey Zanozin, GAZ Group CEO.
"It's a highly promising investment opportunity, given the significant increase in demand for diesel engines in Russia and the positive business development of VM Motori globally," he said.
The agreements enable GAZ Group to set up production of VM Motori engines under license in Russia for its range of light commercial vehicles, Gazelle and Maxus. In addition, local production will provide an opportunity to satisfy growing demand for light diesel engines from Russian manufacturers of road construction and agricultural equipment.
"Through localization of diesel engine production we will achieve the strategic goal of creating a full range of diesel engines to meet existing and future customer and environmental requirements for both Russian and global markets," said Zanozin.
"We look with keen interest at the new joint venture between GM and GAZ," said Vilmo Ferioli, CEO of VM Motori. "We believe GAZ Group will be a strong partner for GM in the VM Motori operation and the entry of GAZ Group as a shareholder brings with it the potential to develop our engine business particularly in new markets, ensuring future growth for VM Motori."
VM Motori S.p.A., was founded in 1947 in Cento and specializes in the design, development and manufacture of diesel engines for agricultural, industrial and marine applications.

So, that means we're going to have to bribe middle-tier bureaucrats with JimBeam now just to get parts?

Sounds like doing business as usual with Chrysler to me... I ordered a few spare parts in the last few months, just in case the geniuses running Cerberus go belly up. Nothing in stock, almost every part had to be ordered from a warehouse somewhere, all prepaid. Alternator pulley, CV boot, serpentine idler pulley, rear brake calipers, rear brake line crush washers, all out of stock. I was able to buy antifreeze without special ordering. The only people in worse financial shape than Chrysler appears to be Jeep dealerships.

The brake line crush washers, a dollar item, had to be prepaid :-)

It's a good thing we don't have to buy toilet paper from Chrysler - the Russian experience would be complete.

Thats standard fair, anything not in stock that is ordered has to be prepaid.

Example:
I recently bought header panel for one of my XJs. It was a $234 part with my discount. It was instock and I had them put a will-call on it, no prepay.

I also recently wanted to order some emblems, for about $15......they would need to order them so they wanted it prepaid.

Think of it from their end, if they order it and you don't come back then they are out the money, ya even if its $2 worth of washers they are probably not going to sell those ever again.

Also its pretty typical for alot of parts to need to be ordered. Why bother stocking tons of inventory thats only going to cost you money to keep around when you can order them and have them the next day from the warehouse?

Actually, I've ordered parts from a foreign brand I won't name, ready to prepay and didn't have to. But, they're not suffering from double digit 30% sales declines either. I understand anything over $20 or so, but a buck brake line washer? They should have those in stock if they're doing brake work, eh? Since 2005, the Jeep parts ordering policy has changed in my area - it used to be anything over $50 at most of them required prepay - entirely reasonable. Anything less they ordered for me without prepay, i.e. oil filtes, fuel filters, etc in 2005-2006. With the shrinking revenue, they have to cut expenditures in every area of their business.

It's an indicator of how short of cash the dealerships are. I've been to a couple of Jeep dealerships about 6 or 8 times recently, and they had almost no showroom business every single time, even during labor day. It's a gauntlet experience every time, heading for the parts department.

That's been the trend for many years, now: let the distributor carry your stock - absolutely does not work for a manufacturer of assemblies or product, but management likes what the bean counters are spieling, so it goes - same for a service dept, or a vendor - customer wants it right now - most are disatisfied with the take-a-number thing, but nobody likes the take-a-delivery-date, *back-back-back-back-back-order slip

It's a good thing there's a lot of oil in Russia. None of those vehicles look particularly fuel efficient. Can you imagine our poor little diesel being asked to drive that yellow van?
