I hate to start this again, but...

Did your airbags deploy? From looking at the pics, you have MORE damage than you think. Tha bumper is cool and yes it did protect the radiator and engine compartment, but it may have caused more problems than you think.

Aside from the less then obvious possible structural issues, I really hope your insurance or more to the point the BMW's insurance company doesn't claim that your custom, non-air bag compliant bumper caused MORE damage to the BMW than a factory one and then your insurance company say, " Well guess we wont cover that, you are on your own." and I know fixing that BMW wont be cheap.

Good Luck Dude. Thats why I went with an ARB. Tested and APPROVED for use in the US and Air Bag Compliant.

Let the bitching begin.

Glad to hear no one was hurt.

The KJ damage does not look that bad in the pic's. The beemer however has some real serious damage.

I love that bumper.......scratched up and all.....it still looks good to me.

Fulltimer,

I see that "stamp" you are talking about on the rear of that Bimmer, ouchies, glad noone was hurt and walked away, best wishes on the fixes to come. Unfortunately my first (and God hope the last) accidnt I had resulted in totalled KJ for me, but the safety the Kj provided me in my accident made it a sure thing as my next vehicle again. Take care.

The insurance adjuster was here yesterday. He spent at least an hour out in my driveway with his clip board and camera. He took pictures of EVERYTHING. I gave him a mat to lay on and under he went. Opened the hood...more pictures. He found the same stuff the dealer body shop found. Now it's just a waiting game to see what the insurance company will do. They may not cover the winch and bumper because they are after market and they were not advised that I had them before the accident. So maybe this is a headsup for everyone to notify their carrier about after market stuff.

Terry

PS: your welcome Burchie.....and thank you!

I learned that years ago , anything I do or add I take pictures of it, keep what it cost at time of purchase and inform the insurance company right away. Lost my butt on a 32 Ford coupe that I did not insure the right way. Have never had a problem since then.

Good luck Terry.

I appologized to Burchie in Private and I will do it again here to all.

I was only trying to remind us all about "After Market" Stuff on our KJ's. And how the insurance companies, especially now days, are looking for ANY reason to deny coverage.

A BEAST of an all steel bumper is a possible great place for them to start. There is a reason Detroit went away from the all steel bumpers in the past. It may turn out that there is LESS damage to your KJ than what would have been. BUT the BMW's insurance company has a great opportunity to say "HEY wait a minute, your client's BEAST of a bumper did WAY mopre damage than a stock one would have and there for He owes us a new Beemer." And then your Ins company gets to say,"We wont cover it either, your on your own, go get an attorney."

I KNOW they were doing that here in KY to those guys with lifted trucks and having the bumper so high off the ground. A couple of accidents and look out the insurance companies were denying coverage and people lost their asses.

I hope all the insurance companies behave and do what they should do. but don't be surprised if we all learn a lesson about using Non Tested and Non Compliant equipment on our KJ's.

Pretty much anywhere, the person at fault is the same one who was corrrectly cited in this accident. The reason why the first person stopped is not relevant, only the following cars' duty to maintain an assured clear distance ahead. The chance of someone being sued falls back on the person at fault in the accident. It will be curious to see if, within the next two years, or whatever that state's statute of limitations for civil action may be, civil litigation is started against the at-fault driver and if the aftermarket bumper is ever mentioned. I have no first-hand knowledge of this having happened, but that hardly means it doesn't happen.

Hope Terry doesn't get sued over it.

Getting sued over a stupid traffic accident is seriously one of the worst experiences of ThunderbirdJunkie's life. Two years of absolute hell :?

It may happen
Case in point , happened to me
79 Ford F150 lifted on 38s with a big pipe bumper which were cool back then, gravel one lane road coming around a blind corner my left tire was in the center of the road, right tire almost in the ditch, guy in a Chev. van came around in the tracks hit me and took out the whole side of his nice new van.

He was cited for speed, reckless op, etc.
BUT 6 months later his insurance comes after me and said that due to my bumper and lift there was more damage to the van then if I would of had a stock bumper on it and at stock height. My insurance paid out over 14,000 bucks in 1980 fighting this, we won sort of but it can happen. Oh and my insurance company dropped me 3 days after the ruling because I was now high risk! Crappy Grange Insurance !

Man I know about those front end collisions.. had one not too long ago myself. Who do you have for insurance? I had American Mercury and they took good care of me. $2,756.49 to fix my front end. Actual retail cost Drew $2,450.25.. (Price is Right btw) So I walked a way with a little extra to buy Doc's rims lol!

Yep and why my insurance agent has seen my KJ,taken pics, and has all receipts for parts done on my KJ.I have all my receipts for my SFA swap and will be heading back home to give copies and let my agent take more pics.It cost's me maybe $5 more a month for my aftermarket parts,$7 per month more for my paint alone, and $3 per month for the gear in my KJ(yes my tools are insured).

Nothing is bent on the bumper. I had my guy at Aggressive Off Road put it on the lift and check everything out. The bumper is fine. Where it is mounted is bent. The body shop and the insurance adjuster saw that also.

Congratulations!
That's good news... and reassuring about the strength of the bumper as well.
