I was doing some stuff on the KJ last weekend (hint hint...pictures coming SOON) and my brake rotors are getting kinda worn out. I'm hoping to find something cross drilled and zinc coated. We have basic ones at Autozone, but nothing fancy. baer brakes said they don't have anything for the Liberty. Has anyone ever used the ones from ebay? I found a few on there, they look nice, but I don't know who manufactures them or if they are the correct dimensions, etc. Looking for some general input.

Rick

Use the search feature. Lots of threads about brake jobs including a new one by Roachman.

Powerslot makes them.

Tirerack.com has them. I think its $100 a piece though. They also have good pads, also cost alot and i dont know which ones are better.

I am using the ones from Ebay *rotorworks* was the person selling them. Keep in mind that I have only had them on for 1 week however I am very pleased with the stopping diffrence. I also upgraded to full cermaic pads while doing the job. If you search for posts by me in the general section you can see a full writeup that I did including photos of what the rotors look like on. BTW they were the perfect size and worked great. Cant beat that for under 50.00 per rotor.

Later,
Dan

I'm bumping this back to the top so some people will see this next question. Are the front rotors on a 2002 the same as on a 2003-2005 Liberty? I guess I could try to see if mopar has a different part number for OE replacement, but I figured I'd ask here first. Thanks.

I don't know if they are different, but I don't see why they would be any different. The only that that changed between 02 / 03 was the transmission, gas tank size and the ride height (which really happend in 02.)

I just went with solid rotors on mine.... I think the ceramic pads make the most difference.

I haven't been able to properly gauge my front pads at all. I am at 36K and drive in NYC/NJ stop and go. Haven't change them.

Besides the infamous 'CLUNK' that some of us get when we brake, I am starting to hear something like a muted metal griiping sound at the end of the braking to stop. It is definitely there when I have stopped short a couple of times.

Is it me or do I need to change? I would like to know how to measure(tool needed) so I don't have to ask Jeep and then have to hear "You HAVE to change them".

Changing the rotors too is a good idea, right?

Thanks.

BTW, I will most likely be going with OEM because I get such a great deal on them.

Not sure if this is really on topic but.... I've got an 02' rene with 78,000 miles I'm now getting ready to replace my SECOND set of rotors (both were worn to thin to turn.) The pads are good (plenty of meat left no metal to metal grinding) but I replaced them when I did the rotors. I do drive alot and I'm not the slowest person on the road but is this normal? Less than 40,000 miles to a set of rotors. My last car was a Firebird and it's rotors lasted over 100,000 miles and the car before that a honda civic, 125,000 miles and never replaced the rotors. I do realize the Jeep is heaver than the other two and I pull several trailers with the Libby (the smallest of which I pulled with the firebird cross country twice a year for several years) but it is still less than half the life of the others. any thoughts?

Get some good Cross drilled, Slotted rotors and run cheap pads. Let the pads wear out instead of the rotors, also cheap pads vs Metalic pads heat up less and tend not to warp rotors as easily. If you need a lot of stopping power you could run ceramic pads.

I've been running ceramic pads to keep the brake dust down as well as the stopping power (towing the trailers the more stopping power the better).

Are the ceramic pads part of my problem? I will admit the rotors are slightly warped, which is part of the reason I'm changing them.

Ceramic pads do heat up more and will not wear as fast as cheap pads, something has to wear, you could try cheap pads, if they give good enough stopping power then go with them, if not try a semi-metalic, a full metalic will be worse than the ceramic.

hmmm...can anyone else comment on that? I'd say that dirt doesn't like most things.

I didn't have any problems this weekend with ceramic pads in two trails with lots o dust. one weekend doesn't make a sound answer to that question :).

later,
Dan

I can't comment on Ceramic's not liking dirt... Haven't really submerged my Liberty in mud with my ceramic pads.

Anyone know for certain that Ceramic's heat up more than a regular pad? I thought ceramic had better thermal insulating properties and that is why they have better braking. Less heat = more friction between the pad and rotor. That is what I always thought. In my mind, ceramic pads and solid rotors are the way to go.
