Custom Hidden Exhaust System

Next week I'm having a custom "tucked" exhaust installed. Basically we're cutting behind the "Y" that comes out of the cats and welding in new stainless pipe to a Magnaflow exhaust and new stainless tailpipe. We're going to attempt to keep all of the piping between the Y and the muffler above the bottom of the "frame" rails for ground clearance, and then the muffler will be only about 14" long and will be kept as far back as possible.

My question is this: I've seen a few people run just a little downpipe out of their exhaust, not taking it all the way back to the bumper. Are there any problems associated with doing this that anyone has experienced? How many of you have done your tailpipe that way? It would be nice to have more clearance around some of the objects it passes by...

Only problem I could see would be CO emission directly under the passenger compartment... I'm running a straight pipe where the muffler was and it's worked great.

I've put about 1500 miles on since I put my shorter exhaust on. The downpipe is located about 6 inches forward of the rear axle, if I remember correctly. I have experienced no problems (nor any real benefit) whatsoever related to this modification of the exhaust system. It's working out great.

It's nice having more room around the gas tank and rear axle, but ground-clearance wise I don't see any real improvement over the stock exhaust.

You can run it just back to the rear axle, only time it is a real problem is when you are ideling a lot in one spot. I have ran them that way on muscle cars, Jeeps, trucks, E. Broncos all sorts of different ones with no problems.

As far as tucking it up farther, you may gain a very little amount, but remember the closer to the floor the more heat you may have come up through. Also there is only so much room under there. Trying to tuck it up closer maybe like putting Dolly Parton in a 32 A cup, going to be some..... overflow :wink:

Yeah, I'm just going to try to tuck the pipe where it bends down. May need an additional heat shield in there, will have to see.

The biggest benefit I see to a short pipe on the back is not having to do all of the bending on the longer one.

if you buy a flowmaster muffler they are pretty small.. increasing clearance a lot. i replaced my stock muffler with a flowmaster one and have used it has a skid many time. so i'm glad i left it where it was because the jeep landed on the muffler instead of the rock hitting the floor of the jeep. my muffler is scratched but not dented at all.... it is seriously like a skid plate.

most state laws say the exhaust exit must be X number of inches behind the rearward door. Many guys on here have done it with no fumes comng in so you maybe alright.
What kind of muffler you using?

That won't be an issue for me for long. :twisted:

I'm not sure exactly what we're going to use...I'm supposed to meet with my muffler guy on monday and kick around some ideas.

just cut holes in the hood and run everything straight up! No more problems and the first of its kind on a KJ :lol:

Here's mine...
I have a Flowmaster 40...

I like it because:
No exhaust gas comes in the KJ when you have the rear gate open and the KJ is running.....

and my rear window would shake a lot from the flowmaster... Not so after my exhaust was shortened..
