Need some resume advice

Ok, so as some of you know, I just got axed on Friday from my job of over 3 years. Now that I have had a little bit of time to see whats going on in the world, I have come to the point to needing a create a resume very soon.

My hope is that you guys and gals can help me a little :shock:

Basically what we are looking at is a young person that had had 3 jobs in his life, all of which don't even relate to each other ( Grocery, Walmart TLE, and Big yellow CAT doo doo)

Now, I do have a associates of applied science in diesel power mechanics with a extensive amount knowledge in the automotive side of things.

Some may say, "Just build a mechanic specific resume"... well, I don't know if I want to go back to wrenching. I also hold a class B CDL and can operate fork lift. In addition, I also have experience in other fields as well.

Now I know this is just one big run on sentence, but I'm LOST.....Any help would be appreciated....

First -- stay calm - breathe deeply

create a 'career summary' all of the experience and details you have ever done that might be of use to an employer - it's your reference - you can create multiple resume's by just cutting and pasting.

Monster has lots of examples of resume styles

however the first part is - figure out what you want to do - if you want to drive or wrench, check groceries - whatever - but what you want.
check Indeed / Monster/ Yahoo hotjobs - for Job titles and descriptions that fit what you want - print out about 5-6
go through and look for key words - buzzwords - things that a computer search would look for.

write your resume - expressing your experience - but using the buzzwords

I guess I'm in the few who didn't know you LOST your job. Sorry to hear this.

Let's get to it - I'm not exactly clear on what type of help you're looking for? Also, it's hard to offer advice not knowing enough about you. Especially since you didn't make it clear (to me anyway) exactly the type of help you're looking for.

Should I assume you've never written a resume? Employment web sites can help you build a resume. Regardless If you have previously written a resume or not....

You stated you've had 3 jobs. What did you do at each job? What is "Walmart TLE"? And as for "Big yellow CAT doo doo", I take it you worked for Caterpillar?

1. You mention having a CDL-B. Have you ever been employed in a position requiring federal regulated DOT documention / records with a employer? If not, in the eyes of a future employer, you don't have experience as a truck driver.

2. Although a forklift driver is not federally regulated, if you're not certified on a forklft, your claimed experience generally won't mean squat to a future employer.

3. Have you been employed as a mechanic? If so, can you provide work history for said position?

4. You stated having experience in other fields as well. If you can't provide work history for any experience you may have, it doesn't mean didly squat to a future employer.

Bottomline, all employer's are looking for verifiable work history. Anything else is basically (as far as their concerned) BS or a hobby. And neither can or will work in your favor. Especially in todays job market the way it is. Although if you build a resume and it includes a section entitled 'Other Interests' and or 'Hobbies", include them if they pertain to a job you're applying for.

Under Education - List your School, years attended and degree earned. Again, if you know this routine, excuse me.

Finally, I can't offer much else until you make it clear what type of help you're exactly looking for?

Something else for you to consider when deciding on a job field to persue. When it comes to the three big credit bureau's, if you've had two or maybe three jobs in the same field over a period of years, this works more in your favor than having three jobs in different fields in their eyes. In other words, if you worked as a mechanic at one job for say 5 years, and then went to work for another employer in the same field, they look at the combined years of work history in your field and generally calculate the years combined. At least that's the way it's been in the past. With todays economy and loan market, this may have changed? Again, just something to consider for the future regarding credit.

I second the advice to build one big resume master sheet with all your experience, then cut and paste to create a resume specific to the job your applying for or for the industry your targeting.

Don't forget the temp agencies. In my business, in the last year, we have only hired from temp agencies, give them six months to prove themselves then if they work out we may hire them. Gives us a chance to look at them without a commitment.

Sorry to hear that man, that stinks! I wish I could help ya with your resume but I know an executive secretary to a Pres. of a MAJOR company and she did mine :oops:

Whoa! Germany?! Now that's thinking outside the box. :lol:

Spell check, spell check, spell check!!!! Also, have someone or several people read over your resume, one ofhte worst problems with resume's is spelling and grammer.

...made up potions and cast spells. Their modern day versions all work in HR where they wield there crazy powers over us all.
Having to deal with HR is a necessary EVIL :twisted:

One thing you need to do besides the obvious like using Spell Check (even on your email) and create a great Resume, is get past the HR department and to the boss who will tell the Witch or Warlock to send you down to the lab to pee in the cup.
Willingness to work and having the right attitude is key to getting the offer.
Since you have pulled wrenches, you may be good for skilled construction where the pay is better and the politics are limited to the best brand of beer.
Another option is in municipal work a lot of them are in their mid to late 60s and in bad need of retirement. Pay is not as great, but the benefits are good and some places have retirement pensions.

I still don't have a clue what I want to do in lift, but I guess I will see where things take me....

Me neither and I've been working for more than 25 years and am on my third career! :shock:

Its rare that people know what they want to do until they stumble upon it. Someplace I read that something like 60% of college grads don't work in a field directly related to their field of study. Just keep trying stuff until you find what you like.
