We don't need to prefill the oil filter on the CRD. Since the filter is below the oil level, it will fill on it's own. Just remove the filter before you drain the oil next time and watch what happens.

:? eeehr...yeah...2.5 vs 2.8...(mine is in a different place)

Anyone catch what kind of oil filters that were on the blown up crd's???? Oil amount is more important than oil filter. Use a filter that meets the specs. UPS uses Fram filters and Citgo oil. Somebody better tell them they're using junk. I do not use Fram filters on my CRD. I have good results using the oem filter past 10000 miles.

I have used the bulk pack wix filters from oreilly since my jeep was new and have been running 6k and using amsoil either 10w30 hd diesel oil or in the winter the 5w30 diesel oil since first change at 1000mi. we now have just under 60k on it and it still purrs like a kitten. and the bulk pack of filters was something like $20.00 for either 10 or 12 filters... they come just wrapped in plastic not in individual boxes, they are the ones quick lube places use save money on packaging I guess. and they are made by wix.

I use the Mobil 1 M1 301 that will get you near the 7 qt capacity. It is quite a bit larger than the stock oil filter.

Question....are other CRD members utilizing the M1 301 filter approaching the 7 quart "new" capacity......or a little over 7 quarts????

I just changed my oil and installed my first M1 301 last night; with a 57 mile drive (it was most likely at operating temperature :D ) and a 50 minute drain, my level was 1/8" below the MAX line with 7 quarts of Rotella-T 5W40.

I recently had a used Fram TG8316 tested for oil restriction. it had ~13K miles on it with rotella 5-40 oil.

it had 8 PSI restriction @ 3 GPM flow (strait weight 30 test oil and 180F) the bypass was completely closed until the filter bypassed at 16 psi differential pressure with the flowrate cranked way up. in other words it worked perfectly. moral of story, the Fram TG8316 easily works for 12K miles on a 2.8L CRD with mostly highway miles on an Ohio-like climate.

I have a TG8 on right now and will perform a hot oil restriction test when it is changed with 12K miles on it to get the marginal difference in end of life restriction between the small and large sized filters, if it is less than it may still be worthwhile to put on a bigger filter.

The last two oil changes I've used the larger wix 51515, but have experienced leaks at the seal and had to use filter pliers to really crank it on tight. I usually hand tighten and then a half turn with the pliers. I checked the wix website and the 51516 is specified for our vehicle. The gasket on the 51515 has a slightly larger diameter and is thinner than the 51516. I don't like having to tighten down so hard on an oil filter, so I switching to the 51516.

FYI, I got an equivalent amount of miles on a TG8A on my CRD, 12K miles, same oil. the restriction was 5.25PSI @3gpm. so, like common sense would predict, larger filter = less restriction, exactly 2.75 PSI worth.

The Purolator one is one of the best filters out there if not the best. Thats even compared to the high dollar ones like Mobile 1, Amsoil etc. If you want a Purolator One at a cheap price get the Ford Motorcraft filter. Sometimes on sale for 2.00 at Pep Boys and the same quality and construction as the Purolator One. I wouldnt put Fram on my lawnmower. I have a friend who used Fram and changed his oil like his underwear. One of the piston cooling oiler holes got plugged from Fram filter paper and scored that piston and cylinder wall.

I had bad experience with motorcraft filter at Walmart. It showed it fitting but something didnt seem right. Now I only run Italian mopar filter $15bucks yes but whats another $ bucks. And at least you know it's built for your motor. With a few CRDs motors failing i wonder what filter they were running. I looked at wix filter oreily's. Lower price one had no thingy inside anti drain back? $2 more one had this. But it is not same weight as italian one.

You are correct. I had to check the Wix site and my notes from a year ago to find that it should be 51516.

I wrote in (at that time) to use the equivalent Napa Gold not Silver version as well. I see from the link that the writer says they are the same.

I use Baldwin filter B2 (oversized but fits)... Very good filters IMHO, used them for 5 years now.

The Walmart Motorcraft filter I use is the exact size as the Mopar filter. Long and skinny. Been using that type for 60,000 miles now.
