I live only a few hundred miles away from Toledo, and yet I've only seen a handful of CRDs around in the past 5 years. They aren't super rare....but they are rare.
Just the other day there were two guys in a toyota pickup behind me and in my mirrors I could see them sticking their heads out the window trying to read the back of my Jeep. I could tell they were curious about it...but they couldn't get around traffic to catch up with me. Sometimes these diesel Jeeps still intrigue people.
The most classic though was when I had a 2,200 lb. flatbed car hauler hooked up to the CRD with my buddy's modified Tacoma 4x4 loaded on and we pulled into a Flying J truckstop on the KY/TN state line for fuel. As I eased into the line for the big diesel pumps to fill up...people started coming out of the store to see what was going on. One guy even came over and started asking me how I like the Mercedes Benz diesel.

Keep in mind the WK CRD wasn't out yet. I tried to explain to him that I didn't have a Benz. He tried to argue with me and I nearly popped the hood...but figured he wasn't worth it. Everybody else just stared as my little Jeep drug the 6,700 lb. load up to the diesel pumps.

That 2.8l diesel motor has endless torque, perhaps to much and that's why you guy's with the auto trans are experiencing problems with shudder etc. I don't know if doing these performance mods to extract extra grunt is worth it in the long run because you putting everything else under stress to cope with the extra power and torque.
You fellas in the USA are used to the big blocks and V8's and huge power to mass ratios where the trend now amongst the vehicle manufacturers is small CC's with turbo or super chargers or both.
