ok, so as most of you know i was smoking a little bit blue for a while there until i did that lift pump install like 2 weeks ago. Well that cleared up the "air in the fuel" is guess for the most part but now.....yes now, I just noticed an excessive amount of black smoke. which i do love by the way but its not from a tune...so that means something is going on that is not supposed to, right?

Unless its from the lift pump fuel supply put'n that much fuel to the engine lift pump(which still regulates fuel and limits psi), however the new electric lift pump only puts out 7psi at the max which from what i have read is just right.

I checked the air filter, its not dirty. Also i have an outerwears pre filter to keep out big particles but they flow too good to casue any type of restriction that would make smoke.

So....Any ideas? Im sure someone is going to say something along the lines of "the ecu has advanced the timing to compensate for air fuel ratio" or something like that lol.

But really what you guys think? there is no loss of seat of the pants power from what i can tell.

Check and/or replace your intercooler tubes...they are notorious for splits that cause exactly what you are seeing.

So what do you think is going on if they are the problem? I know that they can be soaked with oil, but it smells like it could be unburnt fuel, at any rate I will take another look at them. I had planed on the samcos but not this early, i didnt think that they looked that bad but i know looks can be deceiving. It started after the lift pump instal, thats why I was sceptical, unless its just a coincedence that the hoses are starting to show their wear/age.

Sometimes it is hard to find the crack...if they are older than 50,000 miles and you are blowing thick black smoke while accelerating...at least one is probably gone/split...

Yea, got it stout. thanks. there arnt too many folks who carry them. Iv got my guy looking for some through his contacts. Im going to see if he can get them for cost if his people can budge on the price. with an item like this with limited dealers they might not be able to move on the price too much.

Mine came from here about a month ago and they came in two days. I'm very happy with their service. Good price.

Seems an awfully expensive approach when you are not absolutely sure it is an intercooler hose leak. There are many possibilities as to the cause of excessive smoke. Have you checked for intermittent codes that may not have triggered a CEL as of yet? Also, could someone comment on whether your 7 PSI lift pump has too much pressure?

Well, I guess the samcos are spendy. However I would like them anyways :D . But back to the pump. Iv had a few guys say that 5 to 7psi was pretty much on the money, thats hear say i guess but thats what guys have posted. Also if that were the case dont you think the cummins pump would be too much psi? i mean i have a 06 cummins and my fuel press gauge would read 10psi all day even with the stock pump(now I run 20psi fuel press w/ the FASS 200gph) so I dont think 7psi is too much. I might be wrong though but i see all you guys run'n cummins pumps......thats at the least 9psi to 11psi. If someone with a cummins pump that has a fuel press gauge in their jeep please let us know what fuel press you run. what type of gauge?

My Carter runs at 9 PSI with no smoke problems, the CP3 can handle it, ignore the theoreticians who spout the Company Line Talking Points about how the CP3 can't handle any Down Stream pressure, they have been proven wrong.
Are you running a tune or black box? Or both?
Have you opened up the 2 1/8" restrictor flange behind the cat even if you gutted the cat?
To test your intercooler, you will need to yank it and take it to a radiator shop that does OTR truck intercoolers and not some place that pretends to fix but only sells new stuff. I have heard of wonder goops that seal up the leaks and will save you a chunk of cash, as long as they are used right.
Kinda like you don't put Loctite on top of antisieze and expect it to work with out cleaning it off. But some one will put Loctite on top of Antisieze and say that Loctite does not work and post it in a thread.

yea....im not too worried about the CP3. its tough. I run a Smarty (TNT-R) Tune(about300hp) with a stack("black box") Dr. Peformance Race tune that bumps up the rail press to about 30K psi. which adds another 180hp.

If the cp3 wasnt able to handle the press. all these companies whos design the aftermarket stuff would be out of buis right now.

I think i am gonna do the samcos just because, and while im at it pressure test my intercooler here at the house to check for any leak down(anyone can make a press tester btw, too easy. i might do i right up when i do it so people can infact do it themselfs)....if i find a leak ill go from there.

Your post reminds me of when i was like 17 and a dumba$$ and drilled holes through my radiator on my camaro. so i didnt clean the holes and just put some jb weld on the holes. the stuff came off and i cracked one of the heads. :dead: ...man i was dumb. lol

Yup, pressure tester on Intercooler would find a leak, but unless you pull it and put it under water, you won't know where unless it is obvious. I have used soap bubbles and they work, but the tank method is better.

Good luck,
