So here's the thing... a friend of mine with a Liberty (no it's not really me) is thinking about getting one of those cargo carrier things that fit into a hitch and then you put a trunk or cooler or moped or whatever on them. My question is what class hitch can we get? (class 3?) and what would it's weight limit be, not towing, but I guess you would call it tongue weight? Thanks!

P.S. My apologies if this has been discussed before...

Not sure, but be sure to keep the spare tire in mind. Without an extension (which would probably lessen the holding capacity) you'd be losing some of that space you just gained.

Haha, moped? I wouldnt go over 500lb. The libby can handle 750 but thats with a WD setup on a trailer.

Heres the one im going to get from target.

Ill drill new holes to pull it in closer to the spare tire.

CLASS 3 would be way more than you need so a Class 2 will work BUT, you never know, you might find a need for the class 3 down the road (future). Murphy's Law.

Most of the racks are only rated for 500lbs

I have one... works well.

Draw-Tite part 75128 states a 500lb tongue weight therefore the max that you should be putting in a hitch-cargo rack should be 500, but most of those racks that I saw stated 400lbs max. I got one at Harbour Freight for $39.99 on sale, I though the sale price was $49.99, and it came with the sides. Some of the rack out there have sides as an option... . I like the rack for when I don't really need the capacity of my trailer.

Don't laugh. They sell racks that mount to trailer hitches for dirt bikes and ATV's. I have seen them on class 3 hitches before. 500 pounds is good enough for most mopeds and some ATV's. You Will sag, but rear airbags in the coil springs can take care of that.

If ure moped comes in at over around 200lbs, buy something else! My full size street bike weighs under 500!

Thanks guys. Yeah my Triumph is 500 lbs dry. I've seen them specifically for motorcycles too. If it was me, I'd remove the spare to keep it as close to the back as possible, and strap the spare to the roof or something. Glad to know we have class 3 hitches available!

200lbs is nothing for the libby. My boat's tongue weight is 230lbs and it does fine.

My drawtite hitch can handle the 750lbs and the stock hitch can also. Ive yet to see a carrier that can hold that much, 500 is the most Ive ever seen and thats what the one I posted can handle.
