Soon to be hooks here
Image
Man those things are bigger than I remember.
Image
Unsightly aren't they?
Image
What a pain to get those things off!
Image
Tow hooks finally!
Image

Can't really see them but they are there! Now when they have the Great Sidewalk Sale at the Mall I won't have to worry about getting stuck on that huge curb anymore!

Hooks are better than nothing, but not the best thing to use.

What would be the best thing to use ?? Seen a few posts mentioning DIY drop hitch D ring setups as well as a front hitch to accept a D ring insert. The problem that I see is the mounting point .... it looks a little thin. Still a newb but am I missing something ?? Seems that if too much force or the wrong angle to pull from is used then no matter what's mounted is going to get bent or torn out.

Would a better idea be to ALWAYS use both hooks at the same time for recovery ?? Or would that just bend them toe-in instead of toe-out ??

Well I don't do much wheeling anyway so they will probably never be used (hence the mall crawling reference). More of a cosmetic upgrade for my tastes. I just wanted those RV hookups gone. 8)

Mechanical aptitude, and good old common sense are your two best tools in pulling anything out that's stuck. Anything man made can and will break at some point, sooner if improperly used.
I see it on the beach all the time, someone is always in a big hurry to throw a strap, rope, chain around something that's either not meant to be a recovery point, or they do attach to a recovery point, and proceed to pull and jerk on a bad angle, or the stuck vehicle doesn't do their part in the process, and that's when things break and people get hurt.

Stock Mopar tow hooks aren't "the Best", but if it's all you got then it's what you gotta use. If those ARB steel front bumpers weren't so darn expensive I'd loose the stock tow hooks on my Renny, and hang one of those up front with their recovery shackles.....unless I hit the lottery, that ain't gonna happen any time soon.....

I agree, but if your only other opion is to put hooks on, better fit Jeep appoved ones by Mopar. Aslo ARB are VERY PRICY $$££€€€, they used to do another version of hooks with a funny which attachment, but I can't find it any more so I have ended up buying Mopar Hooks too. I just hope they are stong enough for when I need recovering :D ..

Is this what you're talking about?

http://www.detoursusa.com/kjbackbone.php

I love mine. Works great and there's no sign of metal being stressed from the use I've gotten out of it.

No, it wasn't that one, but that looks really good. It was built I think by Warn and held also the which attachment. The Hooks where in the same place as where the Mopar come out. It looked like it was same type of back plate contruction as the one you pointed out, but you didn't have to have the whinch on it all the time you could just put it on when you needed it and take it off afterwards. I wish I had down loaded a photo of it  It was i am pretty sure by Warm or housed Warn whinches.

Any Ideas?

Fil.

Strange as it may sound, the basic design of the RV hookups is kind of a good idea, albeit light-duty. Imagine angle-plate instead of the light-duty bent steel and a 2".2" receiver where the circle tubes are... Looks like a great way to mount removable shackle blocks (and possibly a font winch frame). It's actually really similar to what I'm trying to fab up currently.

Nah, just thinking out loud and using the design for inspiration.
