So been looking for a CRD past couple weeks. Found one and went for test drve last night. Pull out of dealer lot and merge onto rural highway, all going well so far. Then when I decelerated it started vibrating furiously. I stopped at the stop light and put in neutral hoping to reduce vibration no luck. Then when I put back in drive no go... nothing happening. Idle holding still even at WOT. Stuck in left lane with oncoming traffic at 80KMH. Family in car... Finally able to inch myself over to the shoulder. Salesman trying all kinds of excuses... maybe not warmed up enough, normal to vibrate as it is diesel etc... I have owned 3 Diesel TDI VW's so know what is normal or not! Once I shutdown the engine and re-started all was okay. Seems like tranny went into limp mode or something else? I hastilly made my way back to dealer un-impressed. Told him to check the tranny recalls etc. Any ideas? It seems electrical although no CEL. It is a 2006 with 78000 KMS on it so still warranteed.
Any ideas if serious issue or not?

Why on earth would you still be looking to buy one like this? Run, don't walk away from this one quickly.

X3, run away from that unit.

Just an FYI: The 2006 did NOT come with a 70k mile warranty from the factory, ONLY a 3/36. So pretty much, they won't be under the factory warranty anymore, if it is a 2006 - They have all aged out, even if the mileage is low enough. Beyond that, I wouldn't trust ANY dealer to properly fix anything under the warranty, if they even accepted it - The techs have uniformly shown a complete lack of ability with our vehicles.

Good luck finding another CRD in better condition, and if you tell us your location, I'm sure we can help you find a competent tech to work on it with you (or for you)

If you have mechanical skills buy it at a reduced price and fix it. With a fluke like that at least you know it is not mechanical, since it went away on a restart. Maybe air in fuel and the CEL dont work like on my Libby sport?

The CRD I bought NEW back in 2005 did this exact thing to me one day with less than 10,000 miles on the odometer. I barely limped it into a parking lot. After that, it never did it again.

Point is, one incident does not necessarily indicate the vehicle is junk. All the electronics on vehicles these days will cause odd things to happen from time to time.

I will continue my search. I am in Montreal. I also have a very good mechanical knowledge of Diesels in particular and understand it may simply be a sensor as it did re-set itself. Hence why I asked the question on this forum. I did walk away from it and told the dealer to fix the probelm before even calling me back. Will see what happens. As for warrantee here in Canada it is 5 years 100000 KM so still have one year or 22000 KMs of warrantee.

Thanks for the feedback!

Sounds exactly like what happened to me AFTER I bought mine. I topok the boost pressure sensor (MAP sensor) out and cleaned it. It was horrible and full of soot/oil. probably never changed or cleaned. I have owned my CRD for 1-1/2 years now and NO other issues.

My problem was exactly how you described. rough idle, no power, rpms low, etc. I pulled in parking lot, turned off, looked under hood. everything seemed fine so i started it and all was good. cleaned sensor later at home and never happened again.

I wouldn't rule this CRD out so I have to disagree with everyone on here. I WOULD consider it, but definately make sure this was the problem. The scary part is you don't know for sure since all if fine now.

If you want power AND reliability get a V8 grand cherokee. they are also solid axle up untill the very latest body style which is cheaper to lift, etc if that is what you are planning. Only downside to a V8 grand cherokee is the poor economy compared to the diesel.

Theres pro's and cons to everything, but the liberty CRD has alot of things that you SHOULD do right away to make it reliable and better drivability.

First thing I did was a lift...factory ground clearance was too low for me cost was ~ $1000
2nd thing was GDE tune I think that came in around $550?

Those alone are ~ $1500 I had to invest to get it up to the power/ground clearance (slightly more now than a grand cherokee) of a stock grand cherokee

Grand cherokees are simpler to lift, cheaper and can be lifted higher for still cheaper.

BUT I LOVE MY CRD!!!!

Have to love them to want one. Good luck on your vehicle search!!!

- Mark

Low Ball the dealer on the vehicle. Mine did this a couple of weeks ago which was chalked up to a leak in my fuel filter that was sucking in air.

They will never find the problem nor will it show again and will tell you it is fixed. Like I said, it is not a big deal on these vehicles, just a fluke.

Kap, I was the first reply to write off that little fluke, I would get it my self at a bargain if I were him

Now at least you know why it was traded in :frankie:

If it's otherwise in good condition see how low you can get it for. A lot of CRD's have these "flukes"

It is a lease return and is impeccably clean otherwise. The cleanest one I have seen so far. I am very aware of Diesel's and modifying / chipping etc and have full intentions of doing so. My VW TDI's I had doubled the power. VW had a similar issue of overboost into limp mode due to sticking valve and turbo actuators. Easy fix for those in the know. I will be seeing another one today at noon and also expect callback form delaer on this one. I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks for the feedback, looking forward to spending time amongst the CRD fans :D

By the way anone know who chiptunes them in Montreal area and which chip is best?

My son and I both have CRDs and are very pleased with the GDE eco-tune which gives about 20% better fuel economy in town and on the highway plus a bit more power. I've got a 2005 without the F-37 transmission flash so I've not yet tried GDE's TCM flash but my son likes it on his 2006 and I'll probably update later next month. GDE is on-line at http://www.greendieselengineering.com/g ... ethod=home and Keith often posts to this forum. I'm pretty sure they are setup to handle orders from Canada.

Radman,

To second what my father said, I'd go with the GDE Tune over any chip. The tune is a more complete reworking of the engine... rather than fooling the ECU with different rail pressure, as many chips do, this tune instead improves the injection timing, etc., and therefore makes the engine operate better overall (follow the link my father provided for more info on what parameters the GDE Tune improves upon).

I've seen as high as 35mpg with the tune (30 if I drive it hard, through mountains), so you can easily make up your investment. And even if you're not worried about mpg, the tune provide a VERY noticeable improvement in hp and torque.

Remember there were quite a few LEMONS that came back. Mostly 2005 models but still, in the hands of a non-mechanic type person, something as simple as a stripped oil plug might be too much to handle.

Hi Radman, sounds like the darn thing went in limp mode. Probably air in fuel due to the fuel head sucking air by the heater plug. In the Montreal area, those darn trucks are like flying saucers to chrysler dealers. They just look at you with a dumb look and "try" different things, especially if it's expensive... Where did you try that vehicle? I'm located in St-Lazare and I am also getting informed about the eco tune. Let me know if I can be of any help. I just had a crd for the last 2 years and just start getting much better reliability after a few mods.

Odds are air in fuel or a clogged filter - mine did that with a bad tank of fuel - Powerservice and a filter change and it's fine - if it's the fuel head leaking you''d have to change that (and/or add a lift pump)

if you're comfortable working on it - it's a great Jeep - if you're paying someone else - it's way too expensive - and there really aren't any trained mechanics.

If you are looking for a smooth, engineered power increase, go with the GDE Hot Tune. The Eco tune is nice and noteworthy, but it sounds like you want more, you will also need to replace the Torque Converter to accommodate the hot tune. This is a good place to search on this tune http://www.greendieselengineering.com/forum

This will be the 'HER' vehicle so she will not care if tuned or not. So I need to be cautious of spending too much $$ on her car no matter how tempting it is for me. Not sure I want to venture into changing torque converter etc.. I just want to get the most out of the CRD with the least amout of hassel and trouble. Tuning is the first and easiest step. Not to mention bang for the buck$ I may have to go with the ECO tune if the stock TC cannot support the HOT tune??
