I'm not sure about anyone else, but every single time I go do some serious off-roading, I end up ripping the outer boot on either front tire. The last time I went out, I ripped both. Instead of replacing them, yet again, with crappy OE boots, I followed up a tip that Jeepin Al posted about Split CV boots to use for emergency repairs.

The guy he got them from said he also had a heavy duty boots that would be good for a serious off-roader. I ordered them for $29 each + $6 shipping. The guy didn;t have them in stick, so he had them drop shipped directly from his supplier to me. I ordered them Wed. afternoon. UPS delivered them tonight. Speed is good.

Anyways, They are from a company called Rockford Constant Velocity. Part # 815-21L. They webpage is here... http://www.rockfordcv.com/

They describe the boots as:

"Rockford's Duraboot is made of a Monsanto blend of special thermoplastic materials which resists temperatures from a frigid low of -65 F up to a scorching high of +475 F. The Duraboot is the ultimate joint protection against variable operating temperatures and destructive road abrasion."

There catalog says the part # I got was for chevy trucks on the s-10/s-15 (inc Cyclone and typhoon) platform, Olds Bravada, Dodge Dakota, Cadi Eldorado and Sevilles, and Buick Riviera. The list is all over the place. I'm not sure if they will fit or not, but they have nothing listed for a Liberty. Their site also listed the price at $18.99 each. grrrr

I'll let everyone know if they work as soon as I get time to install them. They are thick though, the rubber is very firm and is about 3/16" thick with 6 acordian folds. I'll let everyone know if they survive the next trip off-road.

So everyone please let me know if I am the only person with a persistant boot problem or not. And be ready to get a good replacment if these work out for me.

Good post Gris,Cv boots are a much overlooked part by most people. Most of our customers where I work will notice the sound of a bad joint before they'll notice a torn boot. By then it's too late, and they wind up spending from 75.00 to 175.00 for a joint or a halfshaft.I was tellin Al about a tool that stretches the small end of the boot over the large end of the CV so you don't have to take the joint off of the shaft.Hard to believe it can do that but it does. The boots made for this tool are made of a material like medical tubbing, only black in color.Very tuff and can be stretched a mile.I forget which thread it was ,but could probably search itor ask him about it.I think it was the same thread you just mentioned.

dunno. not sure if it's something on the trail or just way to much movement. I can't imagine anything parts of the suspension would be rubbing on them and causing the damage.

Do you leave your sway bar on or take it off?

Gris,
are you referring to the "outer boot" as the CV boot attached to the hub and wheel, not the one on the differential side?

Is there an update on this? Do they work? I was just checking things over under the jeep and noticed CV greese all over the suspension from the inside passenger boot (the one nearest the Differnetial on the passenger side) . I inspected it and found a 2" long crack in the boot. Probably only happened in the last day or two as there was no dirt on the grease.

Anyone have a tech write-up or a good description on how to replace them on a Liberty? I have never done it.

I don't want to frighten anyone who's lifted, but when your front suspension fully droops, your clevis/strut assembly may be resting on your inner CV boot. Jacked it up and take a look. It happened to me on both sides (with swaybar on) but never tore my boots. Al's arms fixed the problem. You'll probably have a hard time imagining what I'm talking about unless you have it happening on your KJ.

That is not the cause of my boot cracking. That cause of my boot cracking is due to it rubbing against itself as it spins where it is most compressed due to the lift. Though I am theorizing that it is lift related I do not have any binding/touching of the suspension on the boot.

I would stick with just getting stock replacements. I have been through two sets of Rockford CV Boots in the past 4 months. When you have a stock one and a Rockford one in your hands you can feel the difference. The stock ones are much more stiff and just generally feel more durable. The Rockford ones feel very soft and flimsy. There is a difference in price. I think the Rockford ones average around $20 and the stock ones froma dealership average around $40 a piece.

Dang digging up from 2007
Bored are we?
I think the stock ones are to hard, but then I have never had any problems like some seem to have, maybe its more in the install than actual use :?

Due to my hectic as ever work schedule and my recent infrequent trips to forums I thought this was my post...oops! OPEN YOUR EYES in the words of Penelope Cruz from Vanilla Sky.
