I bought a new mopar filter head the other day and installed it right after work yesterday. I didn't do my research very well because it seems that someone had already installed the newer unit on my jeep before I bought it. I didn't notice this till I already had the existing unit off and the new one put on. I figured that even the newer units may leak some air (that is my problem by the way, air in the filter head). I installed the new one properly (didn't have to use the wire kit I bought of course since the previous owner had done that for me...) I bled it got all the air out of it and everything seemed alright. I started the rig and it was louder than normal. I turned it off and bled it again getting zero air. I'm taking it down the road and it doesn't even have the power as before and it has that big rig rattle to it. 5 miles down the road it dies. no warning no nothing. I coast to the side of the road thinking I just didn't get all the air out of it and luckily I still carry an 11mm wrench in the glove box just to bleed this thing. I bleed it on the side of the road getting alot of air. It starts up and I start home and she quits again a couple hundred yards ahead. This time I have just a small space to pull over beside the road. I do the same thing and get my wrench out and begin to bleed it. This time I notice that when I begin pumping the primer to bleed it that a small amount of fuel is coming from the bleeder with it closed tight. It pumps up and will bleed out when I open it under pressure of course but when it is closed again it still seeps quite a bit of fuel out of the bleeder. I'm sure that it is sucking ample amounts of air here as well and that is why it did what it did. I called the wife to bring me some tools and I installed the old one sitting right beside the road at 5 oclock on friday evening. Has anyone ever experenced this with any filter head. What happened to it? The dealer should give me a refund on this, right?
Thanks

The OEM bleeder valve is the same as a brake bleeder valve with a hole on the side above a V shaped bottom end that seals by seating on the inverted V base of the hole it screws into. If for whatever reason the Vs don't fully seat against each other the valve will leak. A not uncommon cause is crud on the mating surfaces or simply worn out mating surfaces although neither seem likely in your case. I suspect a manufacturing defect in which case you should be able to get your money back. Of course repeated bleeding over time can wear out the mating surfaces. Lubrication Specialist http://www.lubricationspecialist.com/index.php?p=home used to sell a nifty little replacement valve assembly that doesn't depend on the V faces to seal and has an added tube to route fuel from bleeding into a container but I cannot find that assembly on their new web site.

I tried the bleeder valve from the old one and it didn't help. It was brand new and the bleeder valve had never been out to get crud in it.

Sounds like a defective part. I would expect a full refund or replacement from the dealer.
