Hello Everyone,

I have been away from this forum for a while. I'm in hopes that this topic will glean some answers for me?

My CRD has nearly 80,000 miles and has been trouble free.

Recently, I have had several odd occurances that I can't figure out what is causing my problems.

1. Last night I re-fuel... 1/2 tank and go about 500 feet and the power goes to nothing. I am able to keep it going and limp home. Pressing the pedal to the floor gets me basically nothing. I turn the engine off, re-start and it fires up like nothing is wrong???
2. I had a similar experience where the engine sounds like it is under a sever load and it just stalls and turns off. Luckily, I was off road on the two times that this occurred.
3. The transmission on this car has spells where when I place it into reverse it hesitates and the goes into gear? I took it the Jeep dealer before the warranty expired and they documented the problems and off course it was my word over theirs... The car worked fine at the dealer?

So, there you have it! I am in hopes that the first two tales spark some debate. I was just bragging on the Jeep recently and then this stuff starts?

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Did you scan for trouble codes? Is the new model fuel filter head installed? How long since fuel filter was replaced? Did you open the water drain at the bottom of the fuel filter (more accurately, the fuel water separator) Was the fueling station one which sells lots of diesel?

Wobbly,

No sir I didn't, is this something that O'reillys or Advance/Autozone can do?

I see that the above have the readers for sale. Also, Harbor Freight sells one that is made by Autel.

How long do the code errors stays in the computer?

If you don't have the Check Engine Light on, there's probably no code set. When I had air in the fuel problems from the old style fuel head there were no codes.

There's quite a discussion here about which scanners do what. My cheapo Harbor Freight Code Reader picked up some transmission codes that neither O'Reilly's or another chain's scanners caught.

For information on how long DTC's are stored, consult the service manual, which can be downloaded
by following the link found from a site search.

If your CEL isn't on, I'd focus on fuel issues, starting with ensuring that the original fuel head has been replaced with the new model.

also might want to change a fuel filter and add some PowerService
(I had a bad tank of fuel that clogged up a filter pretty quickly)

and the tranny delay is one of the filters leaking past a check valve - worse when you just start up - new filter change should fix it
(unfortunately it sounds like they didn't rev the part number so there are some old filter packs with leaky check valves that show up on ebay)

Wobbly,

I did have a CEL on the first stall out episode.

I have the original fuel head. I wish there was another solution to using the newer fuel head. IOW a more heavy equipment type filter base. The trouble with this there is very little if any room for this install.

I've been reading up on the lift pumps and all.... I've been lucky I guess. I still have the power cord connected to the base.

I bought Tim's SEGR kit and have it sitting on my work bench.... never got around to installing it. The GDE kit sounds like something I need to persue after getting my fuel issues resolved

ATXKJ,

Thanks for the pointers on the tranny filter issue. This is all factory other than when the TC fix was done "way back"

I'll try to cover several related bases here:
1. the lack of a MIL/CEL light does not mean there are no codes stored; it just means any stored codes are likely not critical (ex. if you pull your viscous heater relay a relay open code is stored but it does not trigger the MIL light)
2. codes are stored until they are cleared. Codes are cleared by a code reader with the delete code function OR codes may clear on their own if the reason for the code goes away (ex. if your torque converter leaks down due to the filter problem mentioned and you crank up, shift into gear and drive away as soon as the transmission "clunks" into gear you will get about 150' at which point there is a significant engine/transmission shudder and the engine stalls often with a MIL; that MIL will clear if you complete like 3 more starts without the stall problem).
3. the temporary fix to torque converter leak down after the KJ has been sitting for ca. 8hrs is to crank up, shift into neutral (no fluid is pumped in park), bring the idle up to 1,000rpm for like 10 seconds, drop idle back to normal, shift into gear and drive like normal. The long term fix is to service the transmission (be sure to use ATF+4) and replace both filters (I favor WIX - whatever you do don't buy any OEM filters over ebay or other such non-dealer web site). NOTE: even filters with a good check valve can get to the point where the check valve no longer works properly. FYI if you are at 80K and it's been more than 50K since the TC fix was done then you are overdue for tranny service which IMHO should be done every 50K. Bottom line is if your #3 failure to engage occures at first crankup after the KJ has been sitting for a while then service the tranny. Any dealer with 1/2 a brain should have done that when you took it in as there is a TSB out on this intermittent problem which Chrysler products have had for decades.
4. items 1 and 2 sound fuel related and the starting point for those problems is the fuel head/filter. If you have the 1st gen OEM filter head it needs to be replace IMMEDIATELY regardless of whether or not it's the cause of these problems as the fuel heater element on the 1st gen head is very prone to burning out and leaking fuel. On the 1st gen fuel head the 2 electric plugs toward the top of the head are of noticably different sizes (one on the driver side, heater plug, is smaller) as opposed to the 2nd gen head where the plugs are the same size and the heater one typically is blue (see http://www.greendieselengineering.com/f ... st/76.page). Shop around a bit for the 2n gen head and wiring pigtail as prices vary (Steve White had a decent price not too long ago) and be aware that the new head comes with a new filter installed.

See my post about 2/3rds of the way down the page at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=60953&p=676662&hilit=fuel#p676662 for how to change out the filter head. It's no big deal to do yourself.

Hello Papaindigo,

Thanks for the very thorough explanation of my issues.

When you speak of Steve White are you referring to the dealer in North-Carolina?

Tom

Yep http://www.stevewhiteparts.com/ . A friend who just bought a 2005 CRD Limited got his fuel filter head assembly and pigtail from them about 3 weeks ago.

How much for the SEGR kit I think I would like to have one of those?
