hey my jeep liberty is nearly at 100k so that means timing belt and water pump time, i also just noticed that i have a huge oil leak from my oil pan gasket. I have check the labor times to do a oil pan gasket job at my work and looked at the procedure, and i am thinking that it would be much more easy to just remove the engine knock out the timing belt and water pump and do the oil pan gasket. i was just wondering what every one else though and if so what else should be done when the engine is out ?

Wow, you're ambitious! Is the only way to reach the oil pan gasket to remove the engine?

As for what to do - it's all pretty much written up on the timing belt change threads. Basically: belts, hoses, water pump, thermostat, idler pulleys and tensioners for the timing belt (under the cover). Consensus is that the labor is significant enough that it makes sense to replace them while you're there - as their lifespan isn't that much greater anyway.

If you pull the engine - it's just easier to access everything and be thorough?

well i think that instead of removing the lower cradle which is what you would have to do for oil pan gasket stated in shop key at my work, pulling the engine would be a better way just because you have to make sure the cradle goes back on right and to drop a cradle is really a two person job to be really safe and i think there is a lot more involved with the cradle drop. do not get me wrong i know ether way there is going to be a lot of work that needs to be done

You may want to spray some brake cleaner around the sides and bottom of your engine. This is the first we have heard of the leaky oil pan gasket. It is common for oil leaks to drip down both sides of the block and collect on the oil pan. On passenger side oil will leak from the turbo return pipe where it connects back to the block. On dirver's side soot, sludge and goo tend to ooze from the EGR valve area and down past starter to oil pan (this stuff almost looks like oil). Hopefully you do not have to pull the engine, it is a lot of work! GDE
