I’m still using my factory battery, which according to the build date is 5 years old. There’s nothing too impressive about a 5 year old battery, but it’s probably outlasted a fair share of Liberty OE batteries. Anyway, last winter my jeep BARELY turned over when the temps just dipped below 10 degrees. I’m sure the Jeep didn’t have enough cranking power when the temps fell below 0. Our lowest temp hit -29 degrees. Anyway, I had no choice but to plug in the electric battery blanket. With the aid of the battery blanket, the Jeep was able to fire up under those extreme temperatures and make it through the winter.

I didn’t think the battery would last much longer. I certainly didn’t think it would make it into this winter. The last few weeks we’ve been hitting below 15 degrees. It’s suppose to be around -1 degree in the morning. So far, the battery blanket has worked well. I’m not saying that a battery blanket is the solution to a battery that needs to be replaced, but I will say that it has certainly been a nice Band-Aid to prolong the life of the battery. We’ll see how well I get through the rest of this winter.

Anyway, if you live in cold climates and want a little extra cold weather starting protection, then I would recommend the Mopar Battery Blanket. It should fit any battery with a 28" - 36" inch circumference, Part # 82300778

I got the Sears DieHard, Platinum P-1 - Group Size 34 on my Christmas List. 8) I just hope that Santa thinks I've been a good boy.

EDIT: Hit -5 and the Jeep still fired up. Without the battery blanket, there would be no hope for this battery. :grim:

Okay, here's an update:

My wife took the KJ to Firestone for our usual 3,000 mile 5 tire rotation. Upon doing so, they performed a courtesy check. She brought home a printout that showed how the battery checked out.

Battery Results:
Voltage: 12.48V
Measured: 507 CCA
Rated: 600 CCA
Temperature: 67*F
Marginal Battery
“Your battery may fail to start your vehicle below 18*F or in extreme heat”
“Consider replacing your battery before it is exposed to temperature extremes.”
“The average low and high temperatures in this regions are 5*F & 95*F”
“The average battery life in this region is 55-65 months”

On the courtesy checklist, they marked “marginal” instead of “replace.” I was curious how much more life can we expect from the Factory battery that’s 5 years and 2 months old according to the build date. I must admit, their testing is pretty accurate. If it wasn’t for my electric battery blanket, the KJ wouldn’t start in the cold mornings.

Eventually, I want to replace the battery with a Sears DieHard, Platinum P-1 (Group Size 34) or an Odyssey PC1500. But I’d like to milk this battery out and replace in the Fall.

You can drive until the battery fails but you might end up spending more.A bad battery is hard on all the electronics in the truck .Battery voltage drop or surge can deprogram some electronics and give you fault codes that are not faulty at all. If you replace it now, you choose when and where , if you wait for it to fail, your options are sometimes limited. Your choice :juggle:

Yeah, I do not want to play Russian roulette with the battery. The battery tested in the marginal area, so I was curious if I had some life left. But I see your point........ and where I live, this is not the place for a failed battery. :CAMPING:

I found the Odyssey PC1500 for $278 at Autoanything with free shipping.
http://www.autoanything.com/car-batteri ... 1A0A0.aspx

ODYSSEY Part #ODY34-PC1500T-A
10.85" Long, 6.76" Wide, 7.82" Tall, 51.5 lbs
CCA: 880 amps
MCA: 1050 amps
Voltage: 12V
Capacity: 68 Ah (C/20)
Reserve Capacity: 135 minutes

Sears had the same battery for $478  Image
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1260 ... ockType=G3

And shipping starts off at $38.97 Image

I have no proof, but I’ve been told that the DieHard Platinum P1 is made by Odyssey. If that is true, then the Sears Platinum Group 34 would be the best price:

$219.99

Thanks to the electric battery blanket, the OE battery made it through the winter. I'm sure it would be good for the rest of the summer, but since I was waiting for my wife at the mall, I decided to walk across the street to Sears and buy the battery. The nearest Sears is over 2 hours away from where we live.
