I just got my second oil analysis from blackstone labs. seems everything is good all wear metals are lower than the last sample I sent in 8/21/2010 except silicon is up to 40 from 14. I have an amsoil Eaa 201 air filter it was dirty so I cleaned it and put it back, the report said I may have a dirty filter. I am also worried about the inlet hose from the air box to the turbo. I know that others had issues with that breaking down. I did try to check it out and feel around it for damage. didnt find any but couldn't get to the underside real well and didn't have enough daylight to tear it out and reinstall it today. with 70,000 miles what are the odds its shot?

other than that one black mark I think the oil is cleaner now than the last sample taken a few weeks after the GDE tune was installed so it seems my oil is cleaner overall and the tune may be to thanks for that.

here are the results

MICHAEL: The last sample we saw from your Liberty was back in 2010, and in general, things are looking
even better now than they did back then. Wear metals are lower, even though this was a slightly longer oil
run. Universal averages are showing typical wear for the 2.8L CRD engine after ~6,300 miles, and
compared to those, your engine looks great. The only black mark on this report is a high level of silicon; it's
increased quite a bit since last time, and is well above average. Silicon might show dirt, so check the air
filter. Other than that, this engine looks to be in good shape!

First step - Lose the Amsoil washable air filter. Don't replace it with a K&N either, you are asking for problems and the analysis proves this. Washable "performance" filters are nothing more than bug screens - They don't block the REALLY bad abrasives like sand, which is exactly what Blackstone just told you.

Purolator paper filter for the air. Just do it, there is no performance penalty on a diesel, unlike on a gasser.

Second... 70k miles on the stock intake hose? Do you have the CCV connected? If the answer to both those questions is yes... Then the stock hose WILL BE destroyed. It melts away at the bottom, and the oil contamination might not be able to be felt while installed... But that hose is ruined. $60 at the dealer, and please don't re-connect the CCV to it. Plug that hole with a rubber wine cork and use an EHM to get the CCV stink away from your motor.

well the amsoil filter is not a water washed gauze oiled filter it is something very different. I was using it and cleaning as directed way before the first sample.
http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eaa.aspx

I might be willing to agree its time is up early.

I do not have my CCV directly connected, I have had a Provent most of the time I have owned the jeep. that should greatly reduce oil in the intake to near nothing. not that it still cant be rotted away. the provent catches a good bit of oil.

Geordi I do trust your opinion on the inlet hose and that its likely got a hole in it so I will see about getting a new one. I did put some faith in the Amsoil filter, since it is not like K&N at all it is more like a paper filter than K&N. However I think it may be a good idea to try a paper filter and sample it next oil change.

I appreciate the trust, but I'm just an orangutan with a hammer like the next guy here. :)

If you've had a Provent on there, your hose might not be wrecked in 70k, it is worth the 5 minutes of pulling to remove it and have a real look. I don't own a Provent, so I went with the straight EHM after dissolving my original airbox hose in the oil bath coming from the CCV. (Man what a dumb design)

i dont know about 5 minutes to pull that off maybe. more than that to get it back on for sure the way other hoses are clumped in around. I also noticed my boost hose has been rubbing the hood and getting worse so got to replace that soon.

I will have time this weekend to tinker so will see

Just a thought on the air intake. I just did my timing belt and water pump yesterday with 98000 miles on it. My CCV has been hooked up. I inspected the intake hose very good and it was just fine. It was oily but not soft or bad in any way.

I am going to pull it when I have more time to work on it to get a better look. I am not sure what is going on with the high silicon exactly but I want the problem solved.

The reason for doing the oil analysis is to catch things before they become bigger problems, this is what I want to do. My plan was to do the lab test once every year and I skipped last fall :( didn't want to spend the extra money then because I was dealing with evicting a non-paying tenant from my only rental at the time....paying court costs and not getting paid while the bills still need payed.

So I'm calling the dealer to see what what they extort for the hose then order it if I find I need it

I'll agree with geordi on the need to keep an eye on the air box to turbo hose if the CCV is hooked up to it. That said the life span of the hose with the CCV hooked up is somewhat unpredictable. Cases on point 1) stoutdog's died sometime before ca. 42K miles when the tear was discovered vs. 2) mine was fine when geordi and I removed it a few days ago at 44.5K miles to install the GDE turbo. Go figure.

What I will say is that if the CCV is hooked to that hose there WILL come a time when the hose will die and unfiltered air WILL be pulled directly into the turbo. The EHM with/without Provent approach combined IMHO with installation of a new hose at the time the EHM is installed will ensure the hose won't ever fail. Alternatively I would strongly recommend purchase of a spare hose to sit on the shelf until you need it if for no other reason than you won't have the vehicle "down" while waiting on delivery of a replacement hose. Right now I fall into the latter camp but if I install the EHM I'll go ahead and use that backup hose.

well I asked BlackStone about the results since low wear and high silicon from abrasives didn't seem very logical. this the the response I got.

Mike,
With the kind of wear numbers your engine is putting up, it is almost impossible for the silicon to be from abrasive dirt. Silicon can also come from harmless silicone sources, such as sprays or sealers. If any products that contain silicon were used in or around your engine, that would explain the increase. What do you use to clean your air filter with? Molybdenum is an additive in the oil and not cause for concern. The previous sample was T6 Rotella, and this sample was Rotella T6. The difference in oils explains the difference in Molybdenum, Calcium, and the other additives. Since universal averages are based on the engine with no bearing on the type of oil run, your samples aren't likely to ever have an additive package matching averages. Feel free to reply to this message if you have any additional questions or comments.
Thanks,

still going to check and likely hold an air hose if mine is not busted. the filter was always cleaned with a vacuum no cleaner I haven't changed any gaskets the oil comes in contact with so if its not sand I'm stumped but seems its not causing harm yet.
