Here's an update on Jeep... We got the passenger head repaired at the local machine shop, 2 valves, clean check and lap other 4 valves. no sticking valve guides which is what we thought might have caused the valves to bend. Machine shop said must have been lifters. ordered 12 lifters, head gasket, head bolts, exhaust gasket. we reinstalled cylinder head tonight and should have running Wed if all goes well. Need to borrow special tool to install lifters in drivers side head without removing cam.

Apparently the hydrolic lifters can suffer from both being worn and collapsing due to low oil pressure and when they do the rockers can fall off like #2 and #4 did. When we did the initial work it appeared that all the lifters were ok so saved some $... which I now know we didn't save.... :juggle:

At least your daughter will be back on the road and hopefully she will have 100,000 trouble free miles. :D

So, to all who have been both following this saga and offering information, support, and advice, I got the Jeep back on Jan 21st. Seems that when the hydrolic lifters (lash adjusters) were not changed out in the initial repair, they decided to fail. So cyls 2 and 4 had the rockers fall off when the lifters did not pump up.... put things back together, rockers that is, and she ran briefly but threw them again... only this time the exhaust valves on #2 and #4 bent and stuck....

Took the head to local machine shop, cleaned it up, replaced two valves, checked all others.... installed it then new lifters both sides..... runs and sounds like a dream.....

After the initial rebuild at $3k, I paid for only parts here to the tune of $245.... he had lots of hours into it but as a friend of my best friend he did not charge me labor.... I plan on throwing a couple bucks his way as if not this jeep I may need him again on something else!!

Thanks again folks!! :JEEPIN: again!

JJ

Hi all... by way of an update to those who originally followed this and provided input.... the dang thing threw rockers on cyls 4 and 6... luckily my daughter recognized the sound and symptoms and shut it right down. Had to tow it and had the rockers reinstalled.... I have been running 10w30 oil and changing it between 2k and 2500 miles.... just seeking to keep it doing for my daughter maybe until she starts grad school in Boston in Sept.

I'm gonna get a tutorial and learn to reinstall the rockers myself!!

So here's a link to a YouTube video that depicts the sounds this rocker issue makes.... it's about halfway through the short video. Knock on wood... running fine....

Nice Link! Hopefully I will never have to experience that sound. We'll see if my Amsoil does the trick!

Replacement worked for me. 03 KJ w/135k mi, perfect body, color, interior. Retail value-maybe $7000. Ran low on oil, fried engine. Actual $'s-
Rockauto reblt long block w/3 yr warr.-$2500 incl 2 way shipp.; AT ok, but reblt, 45RFE, 13 bolt pan w/1pan filter & also 1 inside pan spin on filter-$1430 w/1 yr warr; Rockauto new AC water pump-$45; locally reblt starter/altern w/new brushes, rectifier, term. block, bushing & solenoid switch-$166; new hoses, antifreeze, Amsoil 0/30 & filter-$200; machine shop $50; labor engine/AT rem/repl-$1100. Total -$5500+/-.
KJ has good warr, performance & no reliability worries as other hi mileage KJ's would have. Replacing KJ about $7k for hi mil 03-05. Trade value w/bad engine- $1000? With retiring ahead, replaced brakes/discs, shocks/struts & BFG AT's. Was worth it to us, this KJ has been like a mountain goat.
