Well... I BAILED! Bought a '13 Focus ST today. I miss the Jeep, but the ST is more fun! I will be selling the spare parts for the CRD; new molar glow plug kit, extra glow plug (updated, new 5v), timing belt/serpentine belt, a bunch of pure one oil filters, a new molar fuel filter... Not sure what else.

No Incisor or Premolar filters?

:-)r

Best of Luck to you Mike! Come by and laugh at us often!

Thinking about bailing myself after only 5 months into it with the transmission issues that recently popped up.
But like the other poster said, smaller Diesels with 4x4 are quite hard to come by these days.
It took me quite a few months to find my Liberty amid the mounds of over-sized tanks in the likes of the Dodge 2500s and F-250s that littered the ad-space.(never cared for or had any use for massive pickup trucks, but the engines were definitely bulletproof.)
So while I'm still paying it off, I'll keep my eyes on it and here for any needed info should anything else go bad with it along the lines.

Who knows, by the time I plan to get it paid off(2014/15ish), those small Diesel equipped Rams and Patriots that are being hyped about will be in full swing by then.
Definitely not going back into Gasoline-only land, that's for sure.

One thing I noticed about the CRD threads, AUTA(Acronyms Up The A).

The Cummins of the correct year is considered bullet proof. The GM/Isuzu Duramax is reliable and long-lived.

A buddy of mine is a mechanic and talks about the guy with the shop next door who can rebuild a IH Powerstroke. . . top to bottom in one day. That's because he's done so many.

He said he's seen very few Duramax in for rebuild and never a Cummins.

That opinion of the PS is shared by another very good diesel mechanic I've know a long time who has two Cummins.

A monster truck for a DD is not an option for me. . . so I'll never have any personal experience.

And remember that maintenance on a diesel is a lot more than a gasser,

HORSE PUCKY!

Shame on you for repeating that old wives tale. Diesels require exactly the same maintenance as a gasser, they just tend to actually BE USED MORE, so it only SEEMS like they need more maintenance.

Agreed, when comparing maintenance costs we should be considering the manufacturers routine preventative maintenance schedules plus recognised wear parts (brakes, bearings, suspension components etc.). These are almost the same regardless of whether the fuel source is gas or diesel.

The high costs of maintaining our CRD is due to negligent design choices on the part of Chrysler, lack of aftermarket support due to low production volume and the resultant profiteering and cannot be included as part of a general comparison.

If you don't believe, the European market bears testimony to this. Of course there are always "exceptional" vehicles on both sides of the fence.
