Ok guys, here's the deal. I'm a duramax and tdi guy, but my friend has a crd that I help him keep running. 06, 95,000 miles, give or take. It quit his wife running down the road, her description was " bad noise, puff of smoke then died". Would crank but not start, sounded like no compression on at least one cylinder.

Towed it in, pulled timing belt cover expecting that they had broke a belt, sheared teeth, idler died, etc. No dice, timing belt and idlers, tensioner all still looked fine. Decided to pull cam cover and see what was up. Started pulling injectors, #2 has a smashed tip. Things are not looking good. Pulled cam cover and intake, # 2 has 2 broken rockers and one valve no longer had retainer or keepers on the stem.

Crap. Off with the head. # 2 dropped two valve heads, one is wedged in the piston, the other is turned sideways and jammed through the valve seat. I'm wondering how it even cranked over!

So, here's the dilemma. They were about to trade this in on a tdi. I can't see any "cheap" way to fix this thing. At a bare minimum, it needs a head, one piston, an injector nozzle or another injector, plus gaskets, head bolts/studs, rockers, and a timing belt kit. I think the cylinder wall is fine.

So, I'm trying to help him figure out what to do. Used engine, 3500-4000 gamble, plus timing components and labor to install. Repair what he's got, parts seem to be 3000 or so, if we have to go with a new head, less if you can guide me to a reputable source for a good reman. Plus labor to pull the block, replace the piston and rings, and then put it all back together. I think any way he cuts it, 3500 is a minimum, and could be closer to 4500.

Am I in the ball park? Is this thing worth more dead than alive? It's white, cloth interior, body in good shape, tires about shot. No other known issues. What would you do? Where would you go for parts? I've checked ID Parts, eBay, etc.

I just hate to see them sink a pile of cash into this thing and only get slightly more back on a trade or outright sale. I'd guess it to have been worth $7k tops, before the disaster. What's it worth as it sits?

Any thought, ideas, etc, we are open to suggestions.

Thanks!

How long would they like to keep it? I plan on keeping mine for a long while. 2006 CRD limited, 261,000 , broke 2 valves, took out a cylinder wall and messed up the head. I will probably have about $5500 into it, when I am done as I am also going to do a Sun coast torque convertor. I expect to get at least another 261,000 miles out of it when I am done.

It might be worth $2000-$2500 as it sits. The engine repair bill is major.

They don't plan to keep it at all, if we fix it they will trade/sell it once it's running, or they would probably sell it as is. Just hard to see spending that much on a vehicle if you don't plan to drive it out of it. If anyone's got a good head and a good used piston they're willing to part with, then it might be a better option to repair and then sell. But new parts, ouch!

The last CRD with a dropped valve I bought I paid $1000 for. Even at that price I just broke even fixing it, not including my time. I'm still watching for non-running CRDs as parts vehicles, if you want to sell it as is, let me know.

Local salvage offered 1500, heck, I'm a duramax guy, who knows what it's really worth, lol. It's posted in the for sale section now, priced as GDE suggest, will certainly entertain offers. I know the farther you are from it, the less it's worth to you because of transport costs. Would still be interested in a good used head, etc if no ones makes an offer the owner likes. Appreciate the input and interest.
