Is there an interest for such an item?

Figuring that if one has access to the following:

A metalshop (usually has a bandsaw that can cut an axle)
A decent welder (I mean a person, not the machine)
A scrapyard

That they could have a steel diff under their kj for about 600 bucks.. Maximum.

Wj's use 373 gears, tj's also.

Find you an axle from the jy, cut it and order a kit (that I will develop) and your off to the races.

I just want to probe the waters, because I am currently making my own, from a wj axle I acquired for 40 bucks. If I am making my own kit, I can make some for others.

A low cost conversion kit + a ready to go junkyard axle = awesome. I think anyways.

Lemme know.

I'm gonna ask a question - not intended to cause offense. But why don't you wait till you have something figured out that works before you start advertising it for sale or completed.

Cause if nobody wants one, I can make it for just me, meaning the level of integrated user friendliness doesn't need to be as high.

Pickin up what I'm putting down? ;)

Like we all know there are ready to go units out there, but I'm just checking to see if there are other people out there who want to go the alternative route. The DIY path.. Like me :)

But would they/do they possess/acquire help to complete a small project like this?

But you don't even know if "you" can build one that's reliable. I see a whole lot of want to but not much to show for it.

Nothing I love more than a good challenge.

Tomorrow I will post pictures of what I have thus far.

I have all the measurements for the seals and bearings.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

So, you think $600 if I had a welder assemble it? I know their hourly rate is steep.
I'd definitely be interested since the $1500 + shipping ones have kept me on the sidelines.

Keep up the good work!

Need to figure gears/ install kit/installation as well in there as well
unless you are just going to run whatever is in there which would have to make sure its compatible to what ever you currently have

Me having two of those expensive things, they arnt some magical device. Its a TJ or WJ low pinion d30 with short pinion. Having two, and Im a fabricator, its a easy job. Get the measurements right and your golden. Its a few brackets out of 1/2" plate, machined ends for the seals. Alot of welding. Its nothing much to it really. Being cast steel, the diff will weld up really nice.

Since its the SAME d30 JBA uses, i dont see any trouble with it. As long as you get the brackets right. Which isnt hard. Everyone has a Jig on their KJ.

And of course you would have to regear it. Why would you get a steel diff and then run stock 3.73s that came in the TJ/WJ.

And id paint it black, why black? Becuase its not Red.

Yep that was me. The passenger side cv was too long, so instead of dropping another 150 on a cv, I pulled the plug. Otherwise I would have been done.

Keep trying to knock me down baby I love it.

For the number of junkyards out there your gonna find a lp 30 that has 3.73... Considering it was stock in all wj's. A half decent set is right there

I saw 6 tj's with 33 inch tires all running 3.73... What's the big deal?

If your afraid of gas mileage, buy a Prius.

Chances are, if someone is running the stock diff, they are running 3.73.

The reasoning for upgrading to steel, is to enhance strength.. Not fuel economy.

Good welds are the only thing that I'd need to pay for, or then again maybe I should just spend that money on a good welder and do it myself. Like 4x4kayak said, the jig is already there :pepper:

The stock gears are golden for the CRD with 30 and 31" tires. Aren't they? I mean, I can pull some impressive grades at 65 without downshifting. Heck, that's why I have kept the CRD. tooorrrqqquuueee!

Maybe I'll change my tune when I install my Hemi TC? :dizzy:

LOL lots of difference between the straight 6 in a TJ and a KJ, torque curves are completely different. PLUS the fact there are a lot of idiots out there who do not regear/ lug the engines down, create transmission issues etc Ask around to those that ran for a while with stock gearing then went to 4.10s/ they'll tell you it wasn't all about gas mileage but also power/ better response on hills etc.
If you think ITS not all about gas mileage you're way off base, I'll take lower operating temps, no more lugging of the engine, transmission shifting as it should and be able to use overdrive, over mileage , but with lower gears you get all of the above
So if upgrading it should be about both, nothing wrong with the D30a if taken care of. Only thing is the lack of lower gears

Lots of people have gone 4.10s and even I know of one 4.56s with a CRD
CRDs are susceptible to being undergeared just like a gasser is

Am I wrong in thinking that the additional 10% or so of torque that I've added to my crd makes up for the 10% or so in gear ratio/loss of torque?
