Who has done it and how did it work out?

I have not done it on my jeep yet, ive only owned it a month now, but i wrapped all of the pre turbo piping and downpipe on my turbo diesel pick up and it keeps the heat in and you can nearly put your hand on the exhaust pipe. Keeps a lot of heat out of the cab of my truck, main reason i did it. On these guys im not sure you would see any benefit. Downpipe sits low, away from everything and runs right into the cat. Probably wouldn't hurt though!

I also have a turbo subaru and threw a turbo blanket on the turbo and its certainly helped keep the heat away from my topmount intercooler. You can watch videos of people shooting them with an IR thermometer and its impressive how much they help. Again, would it help us? Maybe, maybe not. The exhaust piping is so short on these the exhaust doesn't have a whole lot of time to cool down before its in and out of the turbo.

The main reason i am considering it is because both the crank and cam position sensors are heat sensitive. In fact, the crank sensor is hidden behind a poor excuse for a heatshield just about 1-1/2" away from the turbo downpipe.

Like I said before, probably couldnt hurt. I personally used the DEI titanium header wrap because I didn't want to have to seal anything and its held up pretty well on my truck. Its been on there at least 4 years now and I've had no issues with it. Downpipe wrap looks brand new still minus some scars from the install. The Crossover pipe takes a beating hanging under the truck and even its not in bad shape.

Reviving this thread.

Anyone think that using header wrap on the exhaust manifold and down-pipe might be bad in any way?
I would think that the exhaust manifold being insulated would help keep it from cracking right? Like the OP, I'd like to keep heat off of the crank sensor, and also the oil return line from the turbo, and all the hoses and wires...

My Liberty is over 10 years old with over 170,000 miles on it, I haven't heard of a lot of issues with the exhaust manifold leaking nor am I worried about it.

I'm more concerned with (In general, I've done what I can about these):

Air in Fuel Issues
10+ year old timing belts
EGR Issues
Clogged intake issues
ASD Relay issues
Ceramic Glow plug failures
Rocker Failures
Lifter Failures
Head Gasket Failures

Hexus, thanks for the reply. I'm not really worried about the manifold, unless the wrap is bad for it. I'm mostly just thinking it would be nice to get some heat off of some other components. On a side note, I just dropped 3 manifolds off at the machine shop as they were all warped 1-3mm. But, even the one with 250k miles looked great, just needed milled flat. Actually, they were warped almost in order. 88k 1 mil, 110k 2mils, and the 250k one 3 mils.

I dont know about the reliabilty component of this, but I did read an report a while back where some University did testing on a 6.7L cummins with and without a turbo blanket and tracked turbo response and spool up time as well as boost. They saw a pretty clear improvement across the board, although it wasnt huge. Basically the turbo spools up faster and makes more boost at the same throttle input because you are getting more heat/pressure energy to the turbine inlet. The issue is that they were capable of holding and sustaining a certain geometry on their turbo so that they could actually witness the improvement. If you were to slap a blanket on our turbos you wouldnt see and improvement in boost as the ECU would adjust the VNT. You would get improved response though.

hmm, and no downside of hotter oil or bearings, or longer cool-down required?

I don't believe they went into reliability, but if I remember correctly the EGT's didnt change dramatically.

I will see if I can find it. I was thinking I had posted it here but it may have been over on the F150 Ecoboost forum.

Edit:

Here you go. http://ptpturboblankets.com/upload/UT%20Performance%20Analysis%20of%20PTP%20Turbo%20Blankets.pdf

Page 25 they have some EGT pre and post turbo blanket. Its pretty small. The other thing is, the exhaust side is cast iron and has an extremely high emisivity so that thing is absolutely blasting everything around it with radiative heat. If you throw even the smallest amount of insulation on it, it will protect the cold side of the turbo from getting hit by all of that.

Good deal, thanks! While I have my manifold off I might try to wrap it up nicely also if the wrap doesn't cost a fortune. I bet it will benefit that side of the head also since it really gets baked. :grim:
