Put on the snow tires this week but the tireshop didn't torque down the lug nuts. The wife started to notice some noise while driving. How much damage may occur to the alloy wheels when the wheel lugs were not properly tightened by the tire shop?

Some wheel shops say this may strip/damage the wheels which may need to have metal inserts placed in where the nuts contact the wheel. Anybody have issues like this?

You must recheck the torque on the lug nuts after about 20-50 miles, even if they where torqued correctly they will loosen up after about 20-50 miles and need to be rechecked.I bet it says on the reciept to recheck the lug nuts after a few miles, everytime I have gotten tires it has always been on the reciept.

Yes, I recall all the tire shops especially the good ones always listed that too but I never had to go back to actually do it. I admittedly was concerned here as I religiously do seasonal rotations 2x per year and this was the first time I ever had this issue.

Going back to the shop to retorque. My concern is if this was not addressed in a timely manner, the play in the wheels would damage the wheel lug well.

I have noticed that the inside of the holes in the rim (alloys), where the nuts meet the wheel, get kind of polished looking or kind of black and shiny. I'm wondering if this makes it easier for the nuts to slip. Anyhow, one of my rims started to come loose once. There was no damage to the lugs or the rim when this happened, but I wasn't going very fast and I stopped right away. I do check the torque on the lugs after a short drive. I usually set them at 100 ft lbs per the FSM (spec 90-105). Since then I've used blue removable locktite on the lugs.

John, thanks for the input. I never thought you would need to locktite the lugs.

I went back to the tireshop who installed the wheels and complained that all four wheels were not tight ie. may loosen the lug nuts by hand but the owner told me that they all should be tightened w/ a torque wrench. When I spoke to the tech, he said that there was a problem w/ their air compressor hose which likely caused the issue .... @$^&^#*% So they are BS'ing me about this because clearly did not use a torque wrench....... which may have damaged my wheels given their carelessness. If you are in the lowermainland, don't use a certain Goodyear shop... pm me for details.

Also I agree with you as the torque setting should be 115-155 N.m 85-115 ft lb torque per the service manual so 100 lbs sounds good. Somebody else said it best here, you are the best person to look after your KJ as the shops forget these basic procedures which may impact your safety and damage your vehicle...
