I gave a lot of thought to getting new tires and getting a lift, getting rock rails, better skids, CB radio, and a whole lot of stuff. After much reading and seeing posts from everybody here, I came to the conclusion that I want it all and more. Getting tires first was and obvious choice because of the amount of miles already put on mine, and the winter approaching too. Once this is accomplished, then next step is getting ready for more offroading and to tell you guys the truth I like the look of mudders on the libby, so the idea is to get better rims & add the mudders for my offroading days. Switch to my offroad gear for those days and switch back to my daily gear for other days. Who wouldn't love to have a rig just for offroading only? Maybe when the wife convinces me to get the Commander then my libby becomes my weekend toy - I dunno...

Change Gears!!!
anybody else decided which way to caravan saturday morning to Attica? Anybody going down Friday night?
let settle this quick.....

KJ-BOL,

I would suggest spending your cash on a lift first. Stock tires and a lift will get you farther than new tires and no lift. Plus you can go a little bigger in tire size once your lifted.

VERY good advise - I think I just fell into this trap with bigger tires first, I need some elevation or the low hanging exhaust on the CRD is going to get ripped clear off.

Any advise to maintain the best street manners and still get a 2.5" lift?

You ever notice how it's always the guys that already have a lift and big tires that give this advice? I've never seen a post before this one where someone says they upgraded tires first and truly regretted it. I'm not even sure you have given yourself a real reason to regret it yet. I believe I read that you put 255s on already, which actually isn't recommended without a lift, correct?

In any case ... my rig is a DD more than an offroader, and I honestly think I could have gotten myself killed this winter with those Crapyear STs that came with my rig. They would break lose from a full stop in the rain for god's sake. I also don't wanna be driving around with a lift and ST tires. It just looks mickey mouse to me. I'd rather be driving around with nice a/t tires now and when I do lift, at least I have agressive tires already and to top it off, they are only an inch smaller in diameter than 265/70-16 anyhow, which is what it seems guys commonly run. I will retain my new Firestone A/T tires for onroad activities and get M/Ts on different rims once I lift. I won't have to worry about rubbing on a daily basis and I can have some really agressive mudders for offroad.

Just my 2 cents.

I don't regret it. My tires are perfect for every day driving and construction site inspection and when I get a lift they will be perfect for off road as well. BUT, if you look at the pictures of the last club off road event and see the stuff that people with a lift can go through - it becomes necessary.

I have also had 3 back surgeries, leg surgery, hip surgery, and knee surgery all by the age of 25, so I'm not up for switching extra sets of tires and rims on a whim. For me, my only chance to offroad again like I used to in my old CJ jeeps is to set up my daily driver to the maximum extent possible. Hence, I'm set up for daily driving with triple oversize tires. It's not the diameter that's a killer, it's the width and rubbing on the inner fender walls, especially where the fuel filler neck has a bump out in the driver side rear fender. So far this rubbing only occurs at or near full flex as I've tested at VERY slow speed in drainage ditches in the local park.

A 2.5" lift on my CRD and my planned wheel spacers will still be an excellent daily driver and will extend my capability to both on road and HD offroad. If I can't go where the guys with the lifts go with minimal damage, what's the point??? I'm not out to destroy a brand new rig. And trust me, from over 20 years of offroading in Arizona, that is exactly what will happen.

Where in my post do you see "truly regretted" anywhere??? My reference is that to make this month's club run I need a lift.

And yes, the P255 size is recommended without a lift, but only for CRD models currently. Talk to any Jeep dealership OR tire store such as Discount Tire, Firestone, ect. I did.

Better yet, go to the badlands website and dig around until you find the picture gallery of the terrain - it's not pretty for stockers... A simple dip in the mud means a removed exhaust system from hidden rocks. And these MOPAR skids are not going to protect much of anything. The skids are the only temporary compromise I have made, everything else is in the plan.

Thanks for the criticism though, I appreciate it.

Lemme clear this up. I didn't mean to criticize you. I meant to defend your choice to upgrade tires first, as I did and KJ-BOL is doing this weekend. I am not against you at all. I meant to try to provide another point of view to the guys who ARE lifted already with big tires and always give this advice. My opinion is tires can come first if you know your limitations on the trail. I know for a fact I'll be parking my rig and riding with bakerkj or freejeep or bogdan once we leave the areas safe for my jeep. The plus side of this is it'll give me a chace to see how someone with more experiece handles obstacles. I have been offroad exactly once in my life and that was on a silly dirt hill at a construction site. I was scared shitless, by the way, the first time I attempted the hill.

I wish thier was a better way to express in type the subtleties that speech can give a conversation because it seems online people feel attacked when in reality, that was probably not the intent. I'm all for different opinions and courses of action. That's what a free society affords us.

By the way, sorry!!!!!!!

BTW: I'm also staying at BW.

Do we have a head count yet?

Matt are you bringing your rig?

Look, going back and reading this it appears somewhat intense, but there were not any "!!!!!!" or "!@$#@$" in the post so I really did not intend any harm.

It's just that this whole situation is frusterating. Add to the fact that I'm 6'9" tall and I can't even accept a ride-along with anyone. The only seat I fit in is the driver seat due to the lowness of it. And I agree, email and forums is about the worst way to communicate. Phone and face to face is much better.

Water under the bridge...

I feel your pain. I'm 6'6" and I have a real hard time in a lot of cars, and forget about me in the backseat in anything but a large SUV or a mercedes boat. I get automatic shotgun every time.

I can meet ya'll at the Irving Park oasis. Looks like Matt will be riding shotgun.

This weekend will be exciting - I get to put on the Kilby skid, mount the CB, and probably mount the Skid Row skid (supposed to be delivered tomorrow).

Hey pixeldzn, have you got your AT's installed yet? Have you experienced any rubbing or contact with no lift?

Hey Guys what's new? BroncoX here saying Hi. I'm from over on the Xterra web site. I hope you don't mind me giving a little help here.

Flags can be found at Walmart for cheap. Bright orange bike flags like the ones we had when we were kids. They are like $7.00 @ Walmart, Badlands flags are $15.00 I think.
Stay away from the McDonalds in Attica, They have a time/space issue, as in 1/2 hour for a meal after waiting in line 20min (I'm not joking).
The stream is low and do able in stock form. You should be able to do most of the green trail. We were out the weekend of 11/05/2005 a few stock Xterra's and a couple stock unlimiteds.
Sliders are recommended
Front and rear recovery points should be a requirement.
if it's dry streeet tires are fine.

Most of all have fun! I'd love to go but have to work.

Almost forgot a good meeting place that we found is the McDonalds in Crete next to the Harley dealer. It's on 394 south and Steager road. 394 turns into IL1 which turns into IL17 which runs into us 41 cuts off alot of time from redlights and traffic.

Tires mounted and LOVING them. No rubbing at all since I did the 245/70-16 which is only a little bit larger than the 235s DC sometimes mounts on the lib, allthough I had 225s before my upgrade. The more agressive tread looks sweet and I could immmediatly feel a difference on road as far as grip and body roll.
