I don't think you can really tell any play in the front ds when it goes bad, as the local driveshaft shop thought this one was good. I think that the CVs at each end wear enough that they begin to wobble or vibrate at speed when rotating that fast. If you get some free time, pull the front ds and see if the noise is gone. Front driver's side floorboard was where mine was coming from too, right where the front ds is.

I have an 06 with just 14k on it and I have a bit of play in the rear shaft. Took a bit of time to get use to it but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot in the front driveshaft.

Wildrussian, I forgot to mention, have you gotten a chance to get an alignment now that you have the lift on? It's been a while since I've had the lift on, but I almost seem to remember a noise associated with it being out of alignment after the lift. Just throwing that out so you don't have to spend a ton of dough on parts you may not need to swap.

I'll keep everyone posted!

I got alignment when I first put the lift on. Dealer did mine and from memory I wanted to say my noise could of started after that but I can't really say for sure been too long ago. I had to take it back because it was pulling to the right more than before. I don't trust them so they could of screwed up my alignment even more. Last week I added another conduit nut to the clevis and the humming got a little louder so I need to get alignment again to see if it will fix it. tjkj also suggested that it could be an alignment so I went ahead and made an appointment for monday at the different shop.

While driving yesterday I went ahead and put it in Part time when the noise started and Im pretty sure the noise was still there so I guess its not the front Drive shaft. I will have plenty of time on saturday to mess around with the Jeep so I will take the conduit nuts off and see it that helps, if not I will go ahead and take the driveshaft off and see if that helps. Will keep you guys posted on my progress this saturday. Wish me luck :D

I hope its just a silly alignment. I can see that my front wheels are off camber pretty bad. They look like this / \

psinsyd, what kind of noise did you get when yours was out of alignment?

Sounds like a plan, Wildrussian!! Keep us posted on your progress.

The noise I was receiving was somewhat similar to what you are describing. Something like a humming or a rubbing sound. Yeah, make sure the shop definitely checks the toe, camber/caster, alignment, etc. when they work on the truck.

Hopefully that's all it is. Keep us posted!

Well here is the update on the humming noise. First of I checked all the fluids, everything but the t-case was good. I added a little to t-case to top it off and test drove it, noise was still there. I jacked the front end and checked the wheel bearings and they seemed to be fine, the wheels felt solid when I moved it up and down and to the side there was no play. Finally I took out the 2 conduit nuts from the front sturt on both sides and drove it, the noise was still there but was not as loud. So I assumed it was trully the alignment so I put the 2 counduit nuts back on each side and drove it again and this time the noise was not as bad as before when I had 2 condiut nuts on. Today during lunch I took it to get it aligned hoping that would fix it. The tech said the alignment was out pretty bad and he fixed it and drove it, didn't say anything about the noise. I drove it back to work and I could still hear it. So Im back to where I started from except this time the noise is not as loud. I did drive it in full time and the noise was still there but it was hard to tell because of the noise that t-case was making. Im out of ideas! Any suggestions?
It has something to do with lifting it somehow because without the counduit nuts the noise is not as bad but I really don't know.

AT tires hum a little bit and MT tires hum a lot. There is no getting around it. It's the price you pay for big gaps between the nobbies. Super Swampers absolutely Howl!

I would try to borrow/swap in some simple stock sized radial tires first, if the noise is still there = not the tires.

Maybe install a set of Al's new upper A-arms?

With a 2.5 or higher lift, these A-arms should let the alignment shop get the numbers exactly right rather than "within" acceptable values.

True but I am having the same noise issue and can not pin point it either. I know it is not the tires, totally different sound. As far as as addin in AL's arms the shop couldn't get mine back to factory specs but they were able to get it to drive straight and true. If I get a chance this week after work I am goin to pull the front drive shaft to see if that is the problem.

PSINSYD did you ever get your new DS installed and if so is this mystery noise gone now?

I am picking up the libby tomorrow night. I know, I know, why didn't I just swap it myself, but work has been unbelievably busy, and I really didn't feel like dealing with pulling it out again like I did a few months ago.

When they pulled it to see if it was the cause of the noise, it was TOTALLY gone. Now that the new one is in, I will be picking it up tomorrow night and driving it around a while to verify it's gone. I'll try to post the update as soon as I get home tomorrow night.

I think that's what my noise is just haven't had time to remove it and test drive it. Let us know what you find.

Good stuff. If this is the problem, since my rig is still under warranty the front ds should be covered, right?

Yep, 'twas the front driveshaft causing my nice noise/knock. New one on, and not a peep from the front now. Drove it home and not a single noise to be heard. I'm really glad that one's finally over with!

I do have the old one that I'm going to see if I can take apart a bit to see exactly it wore.

For those who may be ordering, I would have to recommend worldpartsexpress.com. They had the best price on the net that I could find, and that site was recommended to me from a fellow LOST'er. I placed the order, but I didn't have the VIN on me. They replied back and said that the driveshaft was for a manual and just wanted to verify that's what I wanted (I didn't think they offered a manual in '02). I sent the VIN, and I get an email with the subject "price adjustment"....ugh. To my surprise, it was CHEAPER!! WooHoo!

They were in constant communication regarding my order, continuously updating me on my order status. Great customer service. Basically got the driveshaft for just over $360 shipped IIRC.

Hope this helps you guys out there! Kolesy, if it's still under warranty, I would think they would definitely cover it.

Funny thing was, when I was at the shop when I dropped it off, I was flipping through their magazines, and there was an article on someone who had a Grand Cherokee that was doing the same thing, with the same mileage, and ended up being ........the front driveshaft.

For putting new ends on the existing shaft, you could also check out Rockford Driveline in Rockford, IL.

I was told by my sucky dealership that the powertrain warranty will only cover "internally lubricated components". They ALWAYS have an excuse not to cover anything. :x

That's garbage. You would think that the driveshaft would have to be part of that warranty. Maybe try a different dealership and see if you can get somewhere with them. Don't mention that you already went somewhere else, just bring it in and see if they'll swap it under warranty.

You COULD also try and argue that the driveshaft is technically internally lubricated, since it does have grease internally packed in internal joints of the shaft.

Also, corwyyn supplied me with a link of a company that has used ones that have a 120-day warranty. I think he said that they were going for right around $95 there. The link is www.precisionteam.com.

Hope this helps a bit!

well I did a short test with mine today

while driving up my street i put it in 4 part time ( only 4 hi I have) & came to a stop & low hum noise was gone, put it back in 2 WD & noise came back, so I feel I might have a bad driveshaft also

I would love to take it on the HWY & do 60 - 70 in 4part time & see if my vibration & thumping on the floor goes away but I don't want to blow it up

so looks like I have to save some cash & get a driveshaft :x

Well, I ended up jinxing myself I guess. All happy after picking up the truck on Thursday......just for the noise/knocking to come back today. Ugh, at a total loss now. Not sure what it could be now, since it totally went away with the front ds out....transfer case? Sure hope it's not something like that. Hmm, trade-in time? I really don't want to.

Raceinfan, the P/N I have on my invoice is 52111597AA...not sure if you still want to buy one after hearing my latest update though!

Keep us posted on what you find, cuz I'm just about out of ideas and am pretty much done with dumping money into the 86k mile KJ!

Thx SD-KJ. Mine is more of a knocking that starts right at about 45mph. I'm thinking about trying the 4wd test next to see if that has any effect on it. Since it's dry, I'm going to have to find a nice long straight to try it on.
